I noticed something over the past few races. F1 has always used tracking camera shots, helicopters, and other posh camera terms that I'll just smile and nod at.
Why doesn't F1 use drones? I know it'll kill the ambience watching a couple of drones flitting around, let's say, the Russell/Alonso battle, but perhaps down the pit lane or the start/finish straight, some drones would do well to give some proper top-down action?
I know drones aren't F1-quick, but around the corners they can probably pull more G's and offer some funky new angles. I expect I'm missing something - this must have been discussed before, no?
Safety, I imagine. In most cases they would either be over the race track or over thousands of people. I've only seen them used in drifting (staying on the course, but the cars are closed cockpit and there are only a couple of laps) and rallying, where again it's closed cockpit and there is plenty of safe space to operate in.Why doesn't F1 use drones? The FIA wouldn’t let them fly directly over the track, and most authorities don’t permit them to fly over crowds of people, so in practice they’d not be much better off than the crane-based and ‘flying wire’ cameras they use already, with the helicopter for tracking shots. There was also the question of how the drone would interact with the helo, with the latter operating to very strict protocols. Even a large drone would get quite upset if caught in the downwash from the much bigger aircraft.
So, a combination of practicality and safety reasons. The drones do work well in other motorsports though, just not F1.

What I'd really love is some distanced trackside static shots to give an impression of the actual speed the cars go around the corners. The head-on shot through Beckett's is about as close as we get to it now.
It’s something they really struggle to get across on the TV, just how quickly are the changes in speed and direction of modern F1 cars. The Beckett’s camera is one of the best, as is the head-on low shot at Copse where the cars swing around the corner with some ferocity. I’ve never seen a good camera shot of how an F1 car brakes, which is perhaps the single most astonishing aspect of their performance. With existing tools, you’d want the helo flat out down the straight, ahead of but being caught up by the car, camera pointing backwards - but as the car brakes keep the helo flat out and don’t zoom in, watch as it quickly becomes a tiny dot on the horizon. It would be better with a fixed-wing aircraft, which could actually keep pace with the car.
There is a Monaco angle that looks utterly ridiculous (Swimming Pool chicane), but the fact we can only think of a handful over the entire calendar says it all really.
A high static shot at Singapore, where you have some decent human reference points (buildings etc) could be good to highlight the sense of top speed. But long lenses at the end of straights do nothing at all.

Good call. The onboard through Sector 3 in Monaco definitely deserves a mention. From the chicane it’s a few seconds of acceleration, then it’s left, left, right, right, left, left, right, and right again at Anthony Noghes, almost as quickly as you can say it. Looks like a speeded-up movie with the modern cameras. Is that it now? Is there a summary of all the penalties - because I've lost track..
Yep, that’s it. Four and a half hours after the race finished! FIA site has all the decisions.

I make it 10 offences today, plus a few NFAs.
Bloody jobsworths in Austria it turns out!

It would be fun for us car knobbers to see a decent side by side comparison for each part of a lap, rather than than the usual F1 car plays catch up with a road car.
But I think it would be lost on most people who don’t understand how normal cars perform anyway.
Here’s a good side-by-side of the Spa 24h compared to the F1. Even the slower classes of the 24h are bloody quick by road car standards. But I think it would be lost on most people who don’t understand how normal cars perform anyway.

And as for GP2......
You're saying Hamilton had an equipment advantage in the GP2 series?sparta6 said:
No doubting he drives a good car well
You're particularly astute today. To all the non-trolls here, please forgive me for the troll-feeding...I'm in quarantine for 2 weeks and VERY bored.

I get your point. Personally I'd prefer it if the feeding was all done on the Hamilton thread. Sparta's infesting every Formula 1 thread now and frankly he's starting to make General Gassing look like the place to go if I want to find some engaging conversation with likeable people.
You're right, I'll stop the feeding here.Wish there was a race this weekend, but I'm really looking forward to Silverstone, even though I can't attend in person now. I may even not be able to get to watch on TV. I am pretty sure none of the ship channels will be showing it.

I seem to remember having a go with F1 TV before, shortly after it was launched, but without much success. I will take another look.

If you’ll be in the port, get a local SIM card with a big data plan. Much easier than trying to mess around with 0.5Mb ship’s satellite wifi. I seem to remember having a go with F1 TV before, shortly after it was launched, but without much success. I will take another look.
F1TV is much better now from a technical perspective, after a lot of glitches when it first launched.

As far as the British GP goes, that's out, because I'm not allowed to leave this cabin, let alone the ship. I wonder if the very slow internet would manage to show a low-res picture on F1TV? I might give that a go, initial research shows it to be $9.99 per month, so I am not putting a large amount of money at risk.F1TV is much better now from a technical perspective, after a lot of glitches when it first launched.
