First time I've watched the W Series. Heard of Jamie CHADWICK but none of the others. Who is worth keeping an eye on?

Abbie Pulling multi year s1 karting champ but not done much since in any other lower formula. She needs to at least be 2nd to Chadwick this season as everyone else is a total nobody.

If W series gets young girls into racing then fine its worth it. Otherwise racing is the most equal sport to compete in with men there is in the world. Infact with the f1 weight problems all being overweight a female driver would have an advantage

The top three for all but the last half a lap, were the top three last season.

The up and coming Brit is Abbi Pulling who just finished 6th.

Tomorrow’s potential superstar is Juju Noda, aged only 16 and running at the back today in her first race in the car, but has won a lot in karts and lower cars in her native Japan.

But where do they go after FW.... ? We keep seeing them lift trophies and all proud but then it's the end of the line, at least so far as further progression to F1 goes.

They need another women's formula above FW, or some sub league for previous seasons highest performers to enter and battle it out.

They need a quick female driver. Not happening is it.
It really isn't. Not relative to the male competition.

But like female football etc, why not have an entire formula series rather than just a dead end 'congrats, you won FW'?

It wouldn't take that much to have a second level of competition where top females compete in F2 cars across a handful of circuits.

I don't expect women will compete with men at the highest levels sadly, but I have plenty of time to watch them continue to race and improve beyond FW if that were possible.

ETA: I hate these sort of debates because I find myself reading and re-reading each post in case I accidentally say something massively un PC.. It's just undeniable that for all the opportunities female drivers simply can't seem to compete. I feel it's patronising to suggest they need another female only series above FW but then.. on the same basis that would make FW itself patronising I suppose.

It's a minefield!

The next step is F3, but most of them really need to do F4 or something of a similar level first. It's that or switch to sportscars but that isn't going to get them into F1

Yes, their cars are what we now call “Formula Regional” F3 cars.

The obvious step up might be to what we used to call the Eurpoean F3 Championship, which is now called (I had to check this) “FORMULA REGIONAL EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP BY ALPINE”.

But when you’ve been the support race for F1, you really need to be able to get the winner into FIA F3, and that’s the problem.

The prize money of $500k isn’t close to enough for an FIA F3 drive, so you’re offering ladies a free drive from which they can’t progress without their own sponsors.

That's my point. There's no route beyond FW that doesn't pit them against male drivers who always win out.

Why not a further female only place to progress to? It doesn't have to be a major series, just a mini series to pit the best of the best Vs each other and perhaps then after years off success the odd one can progress to F2.

FW as it stands is like a game over accomplishment.

How sad is that. Just post what you think. PC can bugger off.
In a grown up world I’d tend to agree unfortunately we have many who act in a very immature fashion when it comes to PC

Back to the action, WS Race 2 about to start.

Grid is set by each driver’s second fastest lap in yesterday’s single qualifying session.

Whatever this is, it’s not about racing, is any F2,F3 teams going to pick up any of these women and give them a chance, I can’t see it, of course I am assuming none of them are spectacularly rich.

Well that's not a convoluted idea.
They don’t usually do double-headers, so it was either the way they did it or a second qualifying session - as opposed to using the result of one race to form the grid for the other. Good news for yesterday’s non-finishers.

Apart from Chadwick I’ve not seen one who’s good enough to compete in a series outside of this one.

Well this is better than yesterday. It’s almost as if they’ve remembered how to drive again, after the winter break.

Agreed although a couple do tend to regularly outbrake themselves.

F3 qualifying completely insane - queueing and tow-hunting like Moto3.

Like a car park! Cars stationary waiting.
