The drivers and teams themselves must despise the grid walk, if I’m about to go on track I’d want nothing less than someone coming up to me for some inane chat whilst I’m trying to get in the zone.
Just part of the job. Most of the race weekend for the drivers is PR and then some driving in between.

The drivers do always have the option to put some big headphones on or politely say "no interviews".

Even if he's just there 'because he can be', at least research and prep something to say if he's asked!

Yeah, exactly. I couldn’t care less for Kelly, but it was Brundle who looked ignorant and rude there.
Brundle likely can spot airhead arrogant no-talent celebs instantly now and simply dismisses them. I was reminded of his Megan Thee (sic) Stallion encounter when he tried engaging with MGK yesterday. Both got what they deserved.
But he doorstopped Kelly.

Why would you spot an ‘airhead arrogant no-talent’ and try to engage them in a live interview??
Because they're strolling down an F1 grid so therefore it's reasonable to assume they have a load of stuff to discuss about F1? Even if he's just there 'because he can be', at least research and prep something to say if he's asked! It's not as if he isn't aware he's invited for the sake of being seen and spoken to... IE: at least make a token effort to show interest and understanding of the thing you've greedily accepted the invite too..

MGK then decided he'd be more comfortable asking Brundle to play 'air piano' - but that's a problem for Brundle as he's actually there to talk about F1, not pretend to play invisible instruments. As such, he politely excused himself and departed.
Surely at this point in F1’s history, nobody would assume a celebrity on the grid has ‘a load of stuff to discuss about F1’?? rofl

As for doing prep-work…really??

A mate invited me to a horse race thing once and the only prep I did was filling a hip flask. Would you have been up all night cribbing the Dick Francis novels?

I'd be doing some Shergar steak-tasting, just in case I was required to have some knowledge.

His love of F1 and all it entails is so great that despite being given incredible access to the grid and the paddock he couldn't bring himself to stay for the entire race and went home early.
Possibly to read some more Autosport.

Exactly! I think a few on here need to consider that being on an F1 grid might not be that big a deal to a lot of people. Loads of the celebs will be there because management/label have made them.

Vegas up next. What could possibly go wrong there? silly
Given the track looks crap, and the location of the centre of hell for all that's fake / plastic and superficial, I reckon that the grid walk could be more entertaining than the race.

The "show" is going to be the very definition of tasteless tat, and the americans will lap it up without a sniff of a hint of irony

No one expects them to do research. What you’d reasonably expect is some politeness, considering it is also self promotion. You’d also think they could conjure up a sentence about their experience or in the case of MGK the ability to mention something about their own career. It is pretty pathetic when they can’t think for themselves.

One of the last live sporting events I attended was cricket. I only know the basic rules and the odd player names but if someone had chucked a camera in front of me and asked how my day was going or about myself, I’d be able to form polite responses.

To be fair to MGK he did leave after the point at which the usual suspects had told the race thread they were bored of modern F1 and were switching off wink

Apparently last weekend’s idiot had played a concert for the F1 fans on Saturday, so he could have just said the crowd were great last night, thanks to São Paulo and F1 for putting on a great weekend, and now looking forward to the race.

It really isn’t difficult! Martin will usually follow with who are you cheering for, to give them an opportunity to either say their favourite driver or team.

What annoys the fans, is that most of these idiots don’t understand that you can’t buy access to the grid, and that millions of people would swap places with them in an instant, but they come across as not even feigning interest in the sport. As you say, if I got hospitality tickets to a sport I didn’t really follow, and if it were likely I’d have someone stick a microphone in my face at some point during the day, I might spend a few minutes understanding the basics of the sport and the characters involved in the day’s action.

Is anyone genuinely annoyed though? I thought it was awkward but thought nothing more of it until his leaving was mentioned in the commentary booth.

He was clearly out of it so likely the after party from the concert and subsequent ‘pick me up’ in the morning at play. Perhaps someone at sky noticed this and thought it would be a good idea to point Brundle in his direction. I’m sure Liberty don’t care, more column inches for the show.
