If it works, expect Mercedes to change their sidepods imminently.

Will that be blatant copying and shameful too?

They all do it and have done for decades.

I reckon it's good use of limited resources at AM.

Yeah I'm not really sure what they're meant to have done wrong. If their approach from day-1 was to produce the most basic side-pod package they could get away with for the first few races and then copy whichever car looked best to them in pre-season testing, good luck to them. Sounds like a very sensible approach, especially in the cost-cap era. Why waste your limited development money designing your own side-pods when you can get someone else to spend theirs and copy it?

One has to imagine that there are limitations to the approach though; their internal architecture must be compromised to an extent by being so generic and flexible. It's going to be fascinating to see where it puts them in terms of competitiveness. It may also finally give us a decent idea of how the Mercedes and Honda power trains compare?

I don't think anyone is suggesting they've done anything wrong as long as they haven't used photogrammetry - which is banned I believe. That's how they made the Merc copy.

And of course teams have copied since time immemorial but it is unusual to see such large sections copied wholesale down to seemingly the millimetre.

Not wrong, just a bit shameless.

Furthermore how much of this strategy is to appease the obviously impatient Stroll Senior?

Stroll senior is going to be frustrated for quite a while as long as Stroll junior is driving one of his cars.

The way everybody's carrying on you'd think that teams copying features from the fastest car hadn't been going on since the advent of motorsport.
The thing is that the team are that blatant about it, it's obvious enough to call their cars a pink Mercedes or a green Red Bull. Yes stuff gets copied when teams realise that a certain thing is the way to go, but it's usually smaller things like brake ducts or the mirrors. They've turned up with a different design that looks a lot like another car twice now.

I could see this discussed in the thread but does anyone know if alcohol is still banned inside the circuit? 6 of us en route to Gatwick to fly there and this has just surfaced!

As far as I know, it is banned, and what's more, if you attempt to take some in they will steal it at the gate.

But it appears to subvert neither the technical nor sporting regulations. Sadly.

Where it might hurt them is in loss of fans and thus merchandise sales, but I suspect that pales into financial insignificance compared to an extra few tens of millions from finishing higher in the constructor's championship.

I don't think any AM is going to turn their back on them for this. Quite the opposite if it makes them more competitive.

The oddest thing is that people are saying Green Red Bull, instead of just calling it a Green Bull. Far more concise.

It does seem a bit pants, but it will at least be interesting to see how / if their performance improves.

Wonderful moment! (it was green)

The thing was, I knew by the shade of grey /white/black, which was which at the time.

The entire Red Bull pit wall having green cans of Red Bull is top trolling

The Sky commentators in thrall to Liberty / FIA again - constant references to "packed grandstands" when in truth only S/F grandstand is anything like full - all the others barely at 25/50% max judging by the TV pictures.

Are they contractually bound to say "packed grandstands" regardless of the truth?

Yes. A great commentator. The respectful commentary highlighted the concentration required in the game with great gravitas...

Seems exactly like Horner to me - just the sort of passive aggressive bs he likes to throw into the mix - hasn't got the evidence or the balls to directly accuse AM, so snide comments and childish digs are the best he can manage, instead of just dealing with it in the background with the FIA.

Oh no - it has to be public and loud, but not actually factual or accusation - weasel words - "It is quite a thing to instruct your team to come up with a very close-looking clone of our car and of course a few people have moved over the winter period, and what you can't control is what they take in their heads"
