Whoever puts it on pole is a very impressive driver indeed. If Monaco was akin to riding a bicycle in your living room 30 years ago, what simile do we use for the new formula cars? Sportsbike in a a hallway?
Once a few years ago one of the drivers weirdly nearly drove unhindered into the barrier and had to use reverse after running a little wide through the hairpin. They commented that actually on full lock their car can't make the turn, they have to let the rear wash out to achieve the turn -but failed that one lap.I love the history and the daftness of the spectacle. It is what it is. And on Saturday at least this thread will be packed with people loving qualifying.
I will never forget my best memory of Monaco. Had a pass that allowed me to stand inside the chicane barrier in 1997. Lap after lap every driver coming through left a good 3 inches from the barrier. Apart from two, Schumacher and Hakkinen. Lap after lap they gently brushed the barrier just causing a ripple. Every lap like clockwork. No one else did that.
Mika particularly impressed me as this was after his accident and before his glory days. I'd love to have that perspective on today's drivers.

Is there any way to collapse the poll at the top of thread - it's way too large & a pain having to scroll past it every time you come back to the thread.
Totally agree, it's spoiling these threads somewhat for me. I can't see that it adds anything at all.The whole attraction of PH for me is that its free of all this st, its what makes PH totally superior to all other forums imo.

I wonder how long it will be into coverage before Natalie or Croft inevitably say "the glitz and glamour of Monaco"?
The opening shot will be of Natalie by the water welcoming us to glamorous Monaco. It normally is.To be fair, in a shallow way it is a fun place to be so long as you don't itch too much at wealth on display - or the fact a small beer costs about £15.

My race prediction is that if Max isn't first into the first corner, then he will at some point rediscover the old Max red-mist and throw it up the inside coming out of the tunnel. It will probably cause a collision and maybe the end of the race. But it will not, of course, be his fault.
We're due one. He got close whilst winging behind George last raceTheDeuce said:

I worked for a company that used to sponsor F1 Virgin/Marussia for 4 years. I think they budgeted $1m to take 10 guests each year

As well as for Chuck Leclerc, for which drivers is this their home race?
Well, that's a fair question. Max says he has three "home" races, as he was born in Belgium, grew up in the Netherlands and lives in Monaco.Internet suggests:
Hamilton, Bottas, Leclerc, Ricciardo, Albon, Perez and Norris can all walk home after the race (or during it, if they DNF)

I wonder who would have the shortest walk from where they bin it? Senna did well in 1988, crash at Portier which conveniently happens to be right next to the Houston Palace where he had his apartment. Would have been a bit trickier to get home if he'd hit the barrier at St Devote..Internet suggests:

Do we think there is any possibility, that the new design could produce even just one competitive on track overtake?
Is there anywhere that being that little bit closer could result in a pass?
When was the last time Monaco was an actual race? 1990's maybe?

Even though Mansell and Senna put on a show, and Murray was brilliant, there was really no way Nigel was going to be able to get past. And that was with about a 5-second-per-lap pace advantage.
Watching it live I was convinced he was going to go over rather than around.cgt2 said:

Murray 'Mansell weaving this way and that way'...
