I very rarely start threads these days, after making an appalling error of judgment by doing a thread asking if I could live without cruise control. I had NO IDEA of the upset and wailing that was to come... laugh
Did you get accused of trolling simply for asking the question like the OP? I think watching PH explode as a result of a perfectly innocent question is one of its charms. hehe
I don't remember the situation in great detail, but I recall I started the thread and went to do my gig on the ship I was on at the time. When I got back, all hell had broken loose. There were insults aimed at me, people arguing angrily with each other... I won't be asking that question again. eek
Yeah - I posted something once (can't remember what) and toddled off to work ... by the time I got there I was accused of trolling because I hadn't answered a bunch of questions. Being an OP can be a full-time job biggrin

Anyway the answer to this is Fangio, de Vries, Blundell, Hakkinen, Lombardi, von Trips. Needell, Schumacher (M), Andretti (M), Merzario but I admit I haven't read the Title or any posts on the first three pages
HOW DARE YOU leave out Piercarlo Ghinzani? furious

No Bottas ?

He beat all the other teams when at Mercedes.
But was humiliated by Hamilton.
As he should be, Valteri not a top 10 driver
So that's why he is not on the list?

confused
A swing and a miss by Bo. Again.

He's in my "Top Two Osella Points Scorers" list ... albeit second

I would put Lewis at the top of the tree, with George, Lando, Max and Charles as approximately equal, possibly Max below them. He has proven to be blindingly fast in the RB, but for me, there are still questions about his race-craft, he has not really been in a position to be called upon to use it yet this year. Last year his race-craft was definitely very poor, consisting of move over or crash. I also think Danny should be on there based on his earlier performances.

In my opinion, whatever your allegiance, Lewis and Max are a class above the rest.

But, in fairness to the OP, Alonso has scored 7 points less than Ocon this year. So he must surely be in with a shout.

Does being a dick come easily to you or does it take practice? Either way you're doing an excellent job thumbup

Alonso 3 DNF
Ocon 1 DNF

Alonso 2WC
Ocon 0WC

Fair point on the DNFs.

Let's look at it a different way. Hipster fan-fave Alonso edged Ocon by 7pts over the whole 2021 season. So Ocon definitely seems worth third in your ranking system.

When you say hipster do you mean people that have followed F1 longer than the last 5 minutes?

Max has yet to prove he has decent race-craft. As I mentioned he is blindingly fast, but, last year showed his almost total lack of race-craft. This year he has not really needed any race-craft because the RB is so fast in his hands.

Do we default to being hipster fans whenever we recognise ongoing talent year on year, and a driver consistently over achieving for what the theoretical limits should be for their car??

It's just a very trendy thing for some F1 fans to point out how well Alonso is doing, as if it somehow marks them out as more knowledgeable or a more 'proper' fan.

The man is a world champion. Of course he's a decent driver. laugh

Is it "trendy" though? ...... or is it just an objective observation that can be evidenced?

Alonso 2WC 16 years ago
Ocon 0WC
Edited for clarity

Nobody denies that Alonso is good. He's just not top 3 good, probably not top 5 good.

Being world champion a decade and a half ago doesn't give you a pass now. For more evidence; see Exhibit B - Mr K Raikkonen.

46 front row starts, 67 podiums.

Possibly the only non-top 10 driver to do so ?

What you are missing is that he was completely obliterated by Hamilton, in the same machinery. Therefore his rating suffers as a result.

So this Top 10 is based on the perfomance gap between team mates ?
Points or raw pace ?
Reliability or luck ?

Bottas was also P2 in the WDC
