Slightly O/T but F1 must be a little concerned about the 'active world champion' situation

Once Hamilton retires - feasibly at the end of 2025 - it could be a case that there's only one WDC on the grid.......

When was the last time we had only one or no WDC on the grid?
2007 I think. Before that 1994 (and then after Imola no WDCs at all).

I reckon we'll see how watertight piastri's long term contract is at McLaren especially considering who his and his ability of getting out of contracts. It wouldn't surprise me if he ended up at red bull

2004, until Villeneuve returned to Renault for the final three races of the season, 1995 apart from Mansell's two races in the McLaren and 1996 also had only one WDC on the grid.

Didn't he say during the post race interview it's one of the top 3 hardest races he'd driven, in fact it was "definitely on the Podium"

Just a thought, if RB was to demote Perez to test driver and put Lawson into their 2nd car would that be seen as breaking his (SP's) contract? As he would still have a drive but not on race day.

Thier next car could be the equal of the Red bull but without anyone good to drive it they would be stuffed.
Alonso has 2y contract with option of 3rd year?
If it was ever going to happen it would be after the end of perez's time and a 2024 season where Alonso can decide if Aston will ever be any good.

Anyhow, rumours now in Mexico that if Checo doesn’t achieve P2 in the championship, he’s been informed that he’ll be replaced by Ricciardo.

It still all seems very sensational and unlikely but this is F1 and this is Red Bull so much stranger things have happened…..

I would think that with his experience that Alonso is driving well ahead of his inputs, which would make the race a little less fatiguing, whereas Sergent etc, would probably be driving more reactively with their lesser time behind the wheel of an F1 car.

I suppose the question is do Red Bull really care about the number 2 driver? All evidence to the contrary IMHO regardless of what they say.

If it really mattered they would offer huge bucks to Sainz as he’s probably the only one on the grid who would knuckle down and get the job done.

But they don’t care. As long as Max is delivering it suits them perfectly to have a rolling sequence of canon fodder to be spat out, and their No.1 driver’s ego massaged.

Not sure hes fitter, age does play a part, i used to do wheels in pit stops it wec, where the crew have to do alot more than in a f1 stop, well into my late 40's, and i was no where as fit as the younger guys, but i was still as fast, sometimes faster than them, experiance counts for alot.
