NETFLIX DRIVE TO SURVIVE SEASON 5
Discussion
An entertaining watch as usual, not as much "at home with the Horners" this time but still too much for my liking.
A shame there wasn't a bit more focus on Vettel at the end but it is what it is, they can't do it all and maybe he wasn't interested.
The biggest revelation for me was that Otmar Szafnauer wears a medium t-shirt (but may bring a large along in case he has a big meal) - do you think the team just sew in a different label for him to make him feel better?
As a time pass its allright...since the first season it had gone too fake and dramatic
Guess everyone knows they are on camera so start to play up for it
Good way to get you in the mood for the new season as you remember the drama of the prior season and still only thing that lets you see behind the scenes of f1 aside from teds notebook

I’ve been power watching the whole season, I appreciate it’s full of issues (sound effects, fake commentary, timeline issues and skew) but it is great watching, mainly for the behind the scenes conversations.
I never cease to be surprised by how brutal a sport it is, I’d go as far as saying these aren’t really teams in the traditional sense of ‘team’, they tell each other about their team and say things like ‘do it for the team’ or ‘we race as a team’ but they’re all just paid mercenaries who would happily screw each other over for money or power. They’re brutal with zero loyalty and that goes for the drivers, Principals, staff and engineers.
Although I respect Horner he’s difficult to like, vryanno (or whatever that Russian word is) springs to mind. He knows he’s lying, you know he’s lying but you all just play along.
Edit for honourable mention as to how terrible Ferrari did last year, totally forgot. Awesome car but terrible race craft and tactics. They should never have been in scrap with merc for 2nd in the constructors in the final race.

The fecklessness of Binotto preserved on camera for eternity. I wonder if this footage will be shown in future management courses on how to avoid being indecisive and wet.Edited by Boom78 on Saturday 4th March 11:59

Ferrari, despite their woeful tactics, fully deserved 2nd in the constructors champ. As a team they delivered a much better car than the turd of a Mercedes, and at least in the early part of the season looked like they had some chance at challenging Red Bull.
Re. Binotto, I think that's very harsh. He's obviously very knowledgeable, but ultimately out of his depth at the top of the biggest team in F1. He seems like a nice guy, but that doesn't make him wet. He just didn't have the ruthlessness that someone like Horner or Toto has.

The drivers are a competitive bunch. Being loyal to scoring no points isn't really in their nature. If Lando / Charles prioritise loyalty over anything else, they may never win a championship if their respective teams don't make a good enough car during their career...?I think that's also a bit unfair on the entire rest of the paddock, there will be plenty of staff who have been with the same teams for decades, and no team has been successful for that long. Especially in "motorsport valley" there's plenty of opportunity to jump between teams if money / power is all you're interested in without even having to move home.
Obviously you still have a point to a certain extent and certainly between teams and drivers it appears pretty brutal, but then what else should we expect? It is a pretty serious competition!
Would agree it's the behind the scenes stuff that's interesting with DTS, and giving some extra background context to the drivers and teams.
EDIT:
A colleague's partner had no interest in F1 whatsoever. He'd suggested to her to watch DTS. Over the last week she has smashed through about 3 seasons of it apparently and watched the race with him for the first time ever on Sunday.
She observed that it was a bit boring in the middle. Which matches a lot of the old moaning posts (which we do see fewer of now!) from the various rose tinted veterans. "Tuned in for the start, fell asleep, caught the last 3 laps, F1 is dead" etc. etc.

Just been watching it. There’s still a lot to like about it, for all the faults. The only thing that I find very silly are the “candid conversations” - supposedly Zak Brown and the CEO of McLaren sitting down to discuss Riccardo, or the Horners having a completely natural chat around the campfire about Piastri. I like to think the Magnussen / Gunter or the Zak / Otmar chats were real(-ish) - they were real conversations albeit with the knowledge they were being recorded and with a bit of an eye on the audience.

Agreed especially Zaks convo. That reeked of Netflix saying post announcement can you do a little reenactment of how that went down. Same as when horner and marko are discussing something in full view of the Netflix cameras. I still enjoyed it all though and its a minor complaint.rdjohn said:
It’s almost compulsive viewing, but also irrelevant to the real world of F1 and it’s long-term fans.
That's such a strange comment to make. Yes there is added drama & selective editing but I would say a lot of the footage is more real and better connected to the teams, drivers etc than the hours of drivel that happen pre race on Sky F1.Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
