Why does no one launch a car with a dummy aero part to throw off their competitiors and make them look for a new magic system or design that doesn't exist?
They are never the real thing. Wait until testing as a first proper look, even then they don't always have the spec on them used at race 1, it's mainly a systems checks and baseline check these days. The floor edges are often very different on the launch cars to what turns a wheel in race 1.

They do but other designers aren't stupid.

Remember the saw edged Alfa Romeo floor on the Launch car in 2022?

The seat is 100mm back
I was looking at those pictures thinking "nah it can't possibly be that different", but then I realised that 100mm is less than 1.8% of the total length of the car so it's not surprising that it's barely noticeable.

It's more noticeable from the front, nose looks longer.

Actually Mercedes launched that car with normal side pods, and tested with normal side pods at the first pre-season test. The zero pods appeared later.

yes It would be pretty much unprecedented in the modern era for anyone to overturn the sort of performance advantage Redbull had last season in the third year of a stable period of rules. The gap may close enough that other cars win a significant number of races, but the odds of anyone seriously challenging Redbull over the season are minuscule, IMO.

I hope I'm wrong though!

Surely this should be the year where the wind tunnel time vs performance throttling levels up field?

New Cost Cap new Wind Tunnel/CFD time the other teams should be competitive.

The problem is, Redbull had such an advantage last season that they stopped upgrading last year's car around the summer break, so whilst they will have less time/money per season than the other teams, they will have had more of both to spend on this particular car.

I thought they had outlawed that behaviour, and car start dates were now common.

How could they realistically outlaw it? CFD time is CFD time and wind tunnel time is wind tunnel time; there's no way to prove which year's car the research is going towards (and realistically the answer will usually be "both" even for teams involved in a battle right to the end of the season).

Rules adherence I suppose, may as well go back to unlimited tunnel time, track testing and no budget.

I wasn't aware of any attempt to limit when teams could start work on the next year's car anyway.

It's not against the rules though? Is it?
