Hi all, I have flights, accommodation and race tickets sorted for a trip to Monza F1 over the August bank holiday. On previous trips to overseas races we’ve used a car to get to/from the circuit and also used public transport.

Each has their own pros/cons, but I was wondering if your experiences of this race might help me decide the best option.

We’ve spent 2hrs getting out of a car park in Silverstone and Spa previously, but managed to use taxis and public transport seamlessly in Sepang a few years ago.

I know that Monza has a public transport option but I’m unsure on how well the system and capacity copes.

Anyone have any feedback from their own trips?

I've visited twice - staying in Como and taking the fast train in from Switzerland to Monza station. All went very smoothly with loads of buses from the station to the park and then a bit of a walk but that is part of the charm with the crowd. Surprisingly efficient for Italy...

There are frequent trains from Milan Centrale to Monza and from there on race days there are shuttle buses to the circuit, or you could walk it in about 45 minutes.

Parking will not be easy and the traffic around the circuit can be horrendous.

I was in Milan last month and went to Lake Como for the day. The train from Milan Centrale called at Monza on the way and depending what train you get it takes around half an hour to get to Monza on the fastest ones. I caught the train to Lugano which seemed to be the quickest one to get.

Also worth noting the train ticket to Monza covers local and regional trains only, it does not cover the intercity train to Zurich. You need to pay extra to catch that.

On this subject, I'm thinking of taking my dad to Monza in 2025 for his 70th birthday. I've never been to an F1 event before, when would I need to look at booking flights/tickets/hotels?

I’ve used travel center for this year’s trip as booking each individual component separately didn’t really work out much cheaper. https://www.travelcenter.uk/holiday-deals-10450

I can't say I have feedbacks on trips because I used to live 15 minutes from Monza and later in Milan. My F1 race day transportation method was my bicycle. smile

There is a myriad of ways to reach Monza from Milan:

1) The fastest and most direct way is from Porta Garilbaldi Station: all the trains to Lecco, Como, and Chiasso goes through Monza. Additionally, there is a train to Bergamo (via Carnate) that also stops at Monza
2) From the Milano Centrale Station the trains that go to Como and Lugano stops at Monza.
3) From the Duomo Square, you can take the red (M1) metro line and stop at Sesto 1st Maggio. From there, all trains heading north will stop at Monza.
4) From the Milano Linate airport now you can reach Monza pretty fast: take the metro to the Forlanini train station, and from there the S9 train to Saronno.

Depending on your seating sector, you might get another train from Monza to the station "Biassono Lesmo Parco". Otherwise, there will be buses running from the Monza station to the track.

I would avoid going by car to the track during the race day because of the traffic.

Staying up at the lakes is a nice option as :

a) the (Swiss) train is super quick and easy
b) nice to chill out by the lake for dinner and a day or two after
c) it's an amazing calm after the race weekend
d) it's an easy sell to partner/wife/husband

If you're staying in Milan don't drive to the track, it'll be chaos and you'll likely get ripped off on parking.

In the past we've got the train from Garibaldi or Centrale (depending on the day). Don't fall into the trap of getting off at Monza station though, it's actually miles from the track and you'll end up in a queue for a shuttle bus which will still drop you a good walk from the track. Instead, wait until Biassono Lesmo Parco. This is literally a stones throw from the track - the entrance actually goes under Lesmo 1. It gets a bit busy leaving but still much better than the Monza station from what I've heard.

Make sure to check the times to make sure you head for the right station in the morning, from what I remember the train on the Sunday is free and it's relatively inexpensive on other days too

I don't think it is free, but it is so busy that the station attendants just wave you through. smile

The trains are frequent and efficient. I stayed at Lake Como, in 2019 and certain trains had stops and were newer.

Be prepared for a long walk though.

Just a small correction on what you say.

There are many trains that go from Milan to Monza, but only one will also go to Biassono Lesmo. Therefore, depending on which train you took, you will need to leave at Monza anyway to switch to the Biassono Lesmo train (Lecco via Carnate).

The train that stops at Lesmo is an infrequent service that stops everywhere. Monza is a much, much bigger station and virtually all trains stop there.

Monza Park is actually really nice and the walk from Monza goes past the enormous old estate there. If the weather is good, which it should be in September, I'd do that.

Yes, I did mean to say make sure the trains stop in the right place of course.

Just going off my expeirence, you do a lot of walking in a day at a Grand Prix, so if you can save some, save it. Monza park of course is beautiful, but it's not the main reason I was there!

I went last year and drove from home. Stayed about 30 miles east of Monza and took about 45mins to get to the track. Was unsure where to park, but ended up on the street here: Via Sant'Andrea 18, 20900 Monza, Italy outside a nice supermarket. Felt very safe in an affluent area and used the supermarkets facilities before and after including getting a packed lunch. Was hardly any traffic issues and didn’t pay.

Only downside was a lengthy walk through Monza park. My wife and I were fine, but it was probably 45mins to the entrance and it was hot.

Another couple of points. Rumour had it you couldn’t take water in, you could no issues. Since the huge storm in 2022 (I think) sadly most of the trees have gone so there is little shade, and if warm like when we went shade was gone very quickly. We had a GA ticket which was hard work, but apparently even the grandstands are a nightmare as seats aren’t individually numbered so unless you get there early you have to fight for your spot. Some people were climbing into grandstands without tickets too. Maybe the top end grandstands are different.

The whole thing was hard work. With the heat, walking, lack of shade and trying to get a spot I wouldn’t take a 70yr old. That said it was a fantastic experience and I would go again, just be prepared! Going into the track after the race was awesome.

Last year I went to Monza, Silverstone and Budapest. Silverstone was hands down the best experience from a comfort perspective, but Monza had the magic. Found Budapest a little boring.

Train Milan Central to Monza then shuttle bus or walk through the park to the track. Very busy as you'd expect but also reasonably efficient.

On race day there are special direct trains from Milan Central to Biassono Lesmo and back, which will save you the walk or shuttle bus.

I've also driven into the track (albeit from nearby Stezzano rather than Milan) and found it dead easy, not a chore at all.
