Lewis keeps doing that gracious thing so as not to offend when he jumps in some old F1 car from the 50s/60/70s
Says they were heros in the past etc etc.
Emboldened the old geezers and misanthropic types pounce.
He should be honest and say its really slow and easy to get the hang of due to the same controls as grandmas 1979 metro and it all feels like slow motion.
You might get a blister on your hand due to the heavy controls but thats just the first time and you will develop
Fangio skin on that bit for the next race.
So F1 in the past. You might get a blister or die unexpectedly. Like people do on the roads every day.

Your post reminds me a quote from Sebastian Loeb.
He was given the pleasure to drive a group b Audi Quatro S1. When he finished having fun with car, a journalist asked him if he regretted not being able to race those monsters from the 80s. His answers was plain and simple:

"no, it's too slow".

Rose tinted glasses obviously didn't work on a true racing driver.

Aside from the jet tax thing, I thought he’d gone one step further and genuinely got rid of it - as in: doesn’t fly on it any more... as in gets on normal planes.

In any case, the tax dodge / Monaco thing confuses me greatly, since I’ve seen almost all of the racing drivers do the same thing. Cannot see why Hamilton gets crucified for it. If the same level of annoyance was expressed across the board, then fair enough...

The jet doesn't belong to Hamilton anymore or has anything to do with him. I think that it belongs to a private company in Norwich.

It’s not really the tax dodging, although that’s bad enough. It’s stuff I read like this, the guy goes vegan and acts like he’s saving the world. He’s got the carbon footprint of a town.
I agree with your grumpy middle-aged man assessment.

As 'Twenty-Five' has pointed out in the last few hours, and I have pointed out many times across the years Hamilton is NOT a 'tax-dodger' in the slightest. Anybody with a modicum of common-sense minimises the amount of tax they pay, as long as the methods they use are legal it is not 'dodging'.

He is in the top 1% of UK tax-payers and also pays substantial amounts of tax in approximately 18 other countries as well. He also pays more tax in the UK than Amazon and other similar companies. Why not moan about them?

As I’ve pointed out quite a few times, it’s not really the tax dodging that makes him a doosh, I’ve literally said that in the post you quoted, it’s the the pretentious hypocrisy he exudes. “We’re not educated, go vegan and save the planet” he’s literally payed huge amounts of money by an oil and gas company that’s also been accused of being complicit in the commission of war crimes against humanity. The guy is a total hypocrite, and that makes him seem like an idiot in my eyes. The fanboys are blinkered!

Personally I don't regard Hamilton as a tax dodger. In reality I don't think many people would choose to pay more tax than legally obliged and hence criticising Hamilton for minimising his tax bill is unfair in my view; if he's paying what he's obliged to pay per the tax laws then IMO that's fair enough - if people think that's not enough then change the laws rather than blaming the individual!

I do however agree with your comment about pretentious hypocrisy - at times he does spout-off about things when if he'd stopped to think about his own situation first he might have realised he'd be better keeping his mouth shut!

Anyway, back to the question posed by the thread and I have to say I don't really like the term GOAT in any sport - things change significantly across eras and more often than not you just end-up comparing apples and pears in my view. What I would say, though, is Hamilton has developed into probably the best all round driver I've seen in over 40 years of watching F1; quick in qualifying, quick in races and manages to win without resorting to the sort of underhand tactics the likes of Senna and Schumacher wouldn't have thought twice about using. But my dad would have said Jim Clark had all those attributes as well plus of course he won the Indy 500 and raced a whole range of other cars successfully; so I can't say Hamilton was better than Clark (because I don't know), all I can say is I reckon he's the best I've seen....

I think he's just trying to say that at least some of Hamilton's fans can come across as being a bit blinkered to his shortcomings! If that's his point I wouldn't disagree although I'd also say it's not really any different from (say) the Senna and Schumacher fans who could often see no wrong in their idol and were happy to argue black was white even when it clear their man had made a mistake and/or was guilty of a misdemeanour...

I know what he meant but what shortcomings are highlighted re Senna and Schumacher are on track behaviour. With Hamilton there aren’t any so it’s his hair, what he wears and says that his detractors jump on... and of course he puts it out there so it makes him fair game. Me, I don’t feel I’m being preached to, if I am I don’t feel it or I ignore it. I certainly don’t have a who does he think he is telling me to go vegan grievance like some here... I mean seriously!!!?? WTF... getting worked up about something like that. I couldn’t give a fk. I watch F1 for the sport, how the strategies play out, the development race through the season and the racing. Hamilton, the driver, gets it done more often than not.

Really, is this a YouTube comment section...

I feel like I’ve explained quite clearly why he’s a hypocrite, but clearly that doesn’t matter to the fanboys. He’s a new generation of sports idle, the woke generation, where it doesn’t matter what you do, it’s what you say that counts...

That’s just irrelevant drivel and a reflection of your personality... bitterness? Envy? who knows. As stated above, his driving does the talking and so detractors just say, “ah but look at his outfit”.

I’m not sure you have the self awareness to know how that comes across.

Seems like you’re getting worked up to be fair. Don’t worry, it doesn’t keep me up a night and I don’t enjoy his racing any less wink

Personally, for me, the person behind the talent is also important - and he’s a bit of a plonker. He’s still my favourite driver though.

I’m not denying his talent. I’m a Rossi fanboy and it took me a while to admit he was wrong for kicking Marquez off, but he was. I’m just bemused that people can’t see Hamilton is bit of a wally when he’s not in a race car.
