Having been to about 8 events only once at Silverstone have I had my car ticked off the list.
I have had mine checked more times than not (been to more than 8 events but not sure how many in total). I think it may depend on if the event is over subscribed or not, if it is not fully subscribed then there wouldn't be much point in checking a list.PS I marshalled at one Silverstone event and we were definitely checking names at the gate.

They attempted to check usernames a couple of years back and it caused chaos so they stopped
To do it properly usernames isn't even enough - for a start they are all visible on the site, it'd be easy to say any one. They'd need to email a unique ref number of something to the 250 and get them to quote that. Or verify cars to owners in advance. All gets complicated quickly.
In summary, I just need to find another 7 series on the list and pretend to be them ..... oh just checked, there's not a single 7 series in the 250!! Kinda shame the BMW SS won't have their flagship represented.
The first problem is that so many members don't have the correct email address associated with their account, then you have the problem of last minute drop outs, then you have the people that move up the list overnight, when's the cutoff?
Bear in mind that PH isn't manned by an army of staff, there are literally a handful of people that run the events so it would be an absolute logistical nightmare to have to send something unique to every person on the list.

Registration should include a number plate (hidden from publication on the website) but one that can be amended by the user (in case they don't want to take a caterham in the rain).
The system could then be linked to a basic ANPR webcam to cross-check the numberplate against the live list?
Admit there would be some cost issues but doubt it'd be too expensive to implement as the cam can be fairly basic and only needs to cross reference the number plate against an internally generated database.
It would however require a little bit of form amendment coding form the site developers.

To be honest I don't see the need for it. I remember when they were checking cars on the gate (at Brooklands Mercedes day) it was an absolute PAIN to get in and took a good 30 minutes of queuing (and we arrived at around 8:40 so fairly early).
While it can be annoying I've not heard of anyone ever being turned away from a Sunday Service (since I've been going) because it was too full.
Getting an ANPR system? Really?

Not even that, you just need to find a person with no car listed and pretend to be them instead Chaps,
Is printing off the smiley and being honest not good enough ?
I've been to my share of PHSS's and indeed I've missed out on an equal share
But on each occasion I've not made it in I take it on the chin.
People will always try their luck, but if the rest of us just operate with honesty
Then surely things will run smoothly enough ?
I personally don't see the need to make things more complicated.
Just my thoughts.
Cheers,

You'd of hoped so wouldn't you but time and time again I see pictures from people on Facebook who I know damn well only heard of the event via Facebook and just took the risk turning up. They're not even on pistonheads! Is printing off the smiley and being honest not good enough ?

I'm not having a pop at fb, but surely when there's now no point in adding your name to the reserve list (as it would require everyone plus more dropping out to get in!) some form of control on the gate is needed. If I was one of those 250 and I had travelled some distance can you imagine being turned away as the 250 limit had been reached due to random people turning up!?

So how do they get the smiley then? Or are these "traded" on FaceA*se too? I had a reminder set for the day of registration, except that turned out to be a non-event (not PHs fault, I've encountered enough IT issues in my working career).
But the next day I got No. 272 and I'm only at 266 now - keeping my fingers crossed!
I really hope I get in this time - I missed out last year and I've always had at least 1 BMW since 2005 (on 2 at present) and I only live about 6 miles away!
I'll be gutted if I miss out on this one!

I think we should consider the PH staff who kindly organise and attend these events. Expecting them to act as door bouncers is unreasonable. I know I wouldn't want the stress of turning strangers away. People seem to kick off at the slightest provocation these days.
Pistonheads is (these days) a commercial enterprise, so there does need to be a bit of expectation on the organisation of events. Given many of the comments here, and the general SS guidance thread, there is clearly a problem. I'm sure with a bit of simple management and clarity it would be quite easy to make the whole thing clearer and fairer and to handle those that 'kick off'.Gassing Station | Events & Meetings | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
