Not as big a recipe as you have with a low-revving engine, mind you.

As a general rule, it's easier to modulate the power and torque on an engine that makes its power by using lots of revs: try driving a TVR Griffith 500 for a bit... get a slimey enough bit of road and they'll go sideways on negligible throttle at little more than walking pace, due to the amount of torque available at the lower end of the rev range.
