Hey folks, need a realistic time on this, I don't trust googlemaps etc!

Friday night, leaving at about 7 from Junction 10 of M25, how long is it going to take me?

Off topic, but are you off to Radio 1 Big Weekend by any chance?

How long is a piece of string? My favourite route when I used to do London -> NW England a lot was M1 -> A50 -> M6 so avoiding Birmingham entirely. ~4 hours was my best time to Lancaster (IIRC), so add another hour to Carlisle.

I'd look into the train options too.

7 hours anyway.

If you hit any traffic you may be buggered.

At the risk of being obtuse... how many miles is it, and how fast are you willing to travel? Factor in a urination/hydration break if applicable and bingo. If it's Friday night as in post rush hour I imagine you'll manage almost any speed you (legally) want.

The A50's a good road. (well, it used to be when I had to use it)

I did Kentish Town to Lockerbie on Friday night in a minibus limited to 62mph with 9 girls on board.

We stopped twice, for about 15 minutes each time. It took 6:45, but we had a reasonably easy trip out of London. M1 - M6.

We came back M6 - M40, and it took about the same, with similar breaks.

It really depends on how easy you get clear of London. After that we had no hold-ups, apart from a bit of traffic on Sunday on the M6.

last year I did London to Penrith in about 5 hours.....set off at 10:30 and arrived in penrith at 3:30ish.
It was a quiet run up the A1(M) at a steady 70ish.

Carlisle is another 20mins north of penrith.

Best part of 5-6 hours. I would have thought the worst bit might be the M25 as it still hasn't normally cleared by that time. The rest should be clear.

Watch out as you drive up Shap and the flat bit above. Cumbria revenue generation have an almost infantile obsession with scameras.

Surbiton'ish start?? When I used to do the Lancs run I'd head off through Hampton Court for the M3 to the M25, up the M40/M5/M6 though that was before the toll went in

It used to take 3 1/2 hours to get to Preston area on an average run, I cant see it being more than 5 hours to Carlisle

just avoid birmingham is ok.
tried about 2hrs from brum to heathrow on M40 and other 2hrs to manchester (M6 with the average speed cameras), could do faster i guess, if you avoided the peak hours as I said the M42-M6 J11 part is always with heavy traffic.

So... average speed of 60 mph over the 315-330 miles is probably attainable.

Therefore 5 hours is almost attainable, and if you arrive after 1am Saturday morning you've been unlucky getting away from the M25.

Anyone disagree with above assessment?

Will depend, are you going to stop for a break or something to eat? As that can easily take 20 min to an hour.

Suspect it'll be busy as you get near Carlisle due to R1. And of course if you hit traffic elsewhere.

5.5-7 hours isn't unreasonable I'd have thought.
