I'm breaking a car for a mate this weekend, what kind of things would you think would sell on Ebay, and what would you leave for the scrap man?

The car is a 2003 Vectra 2.2 SRi with a snapped Cam Chain (Don't think the engine will be any good, but cams and crank could be?)

The rest of the car, interior and exterior is in decent condition, so almost anything can be removed. Any idea's where to start?

Get an ad on Gumtree, and I'm sure there's a "Spares & Repairs" section in the PH Classifieds?

Might be worth waiting for a free insertion weekend & sticking an ad on eGay too smile

Advertise the car/parts and remove them as required. You never know what people will want. Storing parts once removed is a nightmare, and you will be left with bits that don't sell, yet have taken an age to remove.

I've seen a lot of adds on ebay where the item is listed as x car for spares, if you bid you get a wheel nut or something equally trivial, the idea is you email them and say what you want and they take it off the car and sell it to you at an agreed price.

Might be an idea it means you don't have to spend time necessarily dismantling the whole car to only scrap half of it.

As well as spares, maybe a breaking ad in the cars for sale section too?

Main parts I'm thinking of removing are:

Lamps
Airbags
Interior
Mirrors
Windows
Window Regulators
Cat
Alloys
Exhaust
Inlet system
Maybe gearbox?
Bumpers
Skirts
Radiator
Air-con Compressor
Fan unit
Stereo
Drive shafts

He has room for all the above in his garage, but doesnt have the space for the shell, which would get weighed in, once he has a new motor!

Also worth doing a search on ebay and then selecting the 'completed listings' option on the left panel to see what actually sold.

In my experience it is the stupid obscure little bits that sell/make the most money - bits you would never have thought of keeping (switches/trims/vents etc).

You might as well take the head off and see if there is any damage if you are going to break it anyway.

Usually you can get away with a couple of valves/guides on those engines when the chain snaps smile

i'd just echo a comment from above. the last vectra i had, i ended up getting lots of switches etc from ebay. the wing mirroe adjuster switch is a common breakage smile so they tend to sell well, and don't take a lot to store. possibly look on the wanted section of any owners club websites too for leads to potential customers. saves listing them on ebay and paying the fees too.

They are this style, if you are interested drop me a pm, but obviously I'm not allowed to 'trade' through the forum.

Thanks and point noted!

Might strip the head and re-con it to sell, depends on damage! He was quoted £750 for a re-con engine, plus labour, but decided it would be more fun to buy a shed and take the vectra to bits and see how much cash he can make!

Depending on what sells we may do a delivery run, or certain parts will be collection only! I realise the above as I work with Motor Vehicle Parts, but thanks! smile
