That's exactly as I have my seat set when I drive. 6' 5" with long legs and mr tickle arms. It's what feels comfortable to me. Any higher and my head hits the roof, and closer and my hands catch my knees in most cars.
Are you powerfully built and have a goatee by any chance? hehe

What the hell shape are some people?

VW collected my car and brought it back yesterday after getting a bit of work done. When it came back, the drivers seat was at it's lowest setting and really reclined. I'm 6'4" and I couldn't comfortably drive it like that, even my gibbon-like upper appendages were stretching to the point of shoulder-dislocation manoeuvering in the car park.

I see it all the time actually, usually young guys in shopping hatches. How is it comfortable? How can they see? How can they even fking drive like that?!

You need to be "very powerfully built"....

I'm 6ft tall and drive an MX5 though!

I just questioned the attitude that the OP has in that because they dont understand how it could be comfortable it therefore must be wrong. Simple ignorance really
Did he say it was wrong? I thought he was just expressing that he didn't understand how they managed to drive like that. I think it's called an opinion rather than ignorance.

Forums would be a dull place without opinions.

Ah, but you've heard the term 'spanner monkey' before, I assume?

Have you driven a mk v golf? There's a huge amount of range in the movement of the seat, more so than in my previous car, a w211 e-class. I'm 6'4" with 34" inside leg and stupidly long arms. M+S 2" longer shirts (yeah, yeah i know, i buy cheapo shirts for work) are only just long enough for me.

With the seat in the position it was when the car was returned to me I couldn't depress the pedals right down and could only just curl the top knuckles of my fingers around the top of the steering wheel. Certainly nowhere close to be able to put my wrists on the top of the wheel which is how i usually adjust the wheel to suit.

Anyway, I'm jumping to the immediate conclusion that it was either a complete tool who was driving my car (which also makes me wonder in what manner he was driving my car. Red-line upshifts in a 30mph zone?) or Sun Mingming. And I don't think he works for VW in Aberdeen... wink

I didn't read where the OP said it was wrong though?
Just questioning it..
Which I do ALL the time with a mate of mine..
He's 6"1, drives a 147.
Not sure how low the seat is set, but he reclines the back, as far as he can..he reaches for the wheel..he's a clever, logical, well read, opinionated bloke...but he can't understnad that the closer you shoulders are the wheel the more control you have over the car (to a point obviously)...I use Touring Car drivers to illustrate, but he won't have it...

I don't remember a stance when sat in the car when I was a kid... does make me laugh seeing that crookedgrip thing... if anything happened to closley in front, they'd be fuc'ked...too low, too far back, no control over the wheel, pedals or gearstick.

...so yeah...I'm saying its wrong. (apart from all these tall guys with weirdly proportioned arms and legs have the obvious reason not excuse to do so...

I have the seat on the lowest setting, if possible, and the seat all the way back on every car I've owned.

Disappointing unless you're 9ft with really long arms.

I'm 5'8" and skinny (but I'm triple 'ard) and always have the seat as low as possible. I've normally got about 6 inches between my head and the roof...

They slide the seat right back before getting out of the car to make it easier for you to get in when you pick it up. Yes, they were driving with it rather reclined, but not as far from the wheel as you are assuming.

I don't get it.
Why would anyone wan't their seat to be all the way back?
If you don't want a backrest drive on a stool.

My ex-wife pointed out that my seat was in the same position as the OP's seat (I'm 6ft and nearly 50, car is a Beemer E36) and said that I looked like an Iranian taxi driver.

First time she has actually made me laugh in a very long time.

I do this.

In the Audi if my seat isnt at the lowest setting my knees rub on the wheel. I push the seat back to a point where i can put the clutch fully back without stretching. I then recline my seat to the point where i can put mu wrists on the top of the steering wheel without streching. It means i can hold the wheel with my arms slightly bent which is most comfortable and i have more control when.... 'driving enthusiasticly'
+1

exactly what I do

I konw ive already replied but this thread made me think of other odd seating positions.

You get the nervous looking women who sit so close and upright that their elbows are resing on the base of the steering wheel and their heads are resting on the windscreen. Rendering the airbag useless.

You also get the blokes who usually wear pink t-shirts with a turned up collar who recline the seat so far back it rests on the rear seats, but then they proceed to lean themselves forward using the steering wheel as an anchor point...

Then there are the (normally Greek / Turk) guys in their convirtable BMW (auto) who put their arm around the passenger seat headrest and lean against the drivers side window.

When done for 'ghetto' effect rather than driving comfort I believe it's known as getting your lean on. Wise words uttered by such greats as Tim 'the big dog' Westwood etc

I can't comment on the comfort factor as I'm average height and so have my car seat in an average position/stance, but did commute with a 6'ish tall friend many years ago in an EG shape civic and he regulaly had the seat back wound a long way back and was sure it was more comfortable.

My 540 used to have memory seats and I used to have one set for a high seating position that it stayed in most of the time with my short legs and a fairly upright back but I had another setting stored for dropping it right to the floor and a bit more reclined so my head was more or less level with the B pillar.

I just used to switch positions now and again to give my back a rest on long runs and also because it amused me playing with the seat when sat in traffic.

Third setting was for zonking out in the services on long drives for a power nap (and no, that isn't a euphemism for anything).

Each to their own imo. What worries me more are people like the guy I passed on the M1 doing 50mph (in lane 1 at least) who's seat was past vertical and leaning forward by a good few degrees, with hands at 5 to 1 and using the steering wheel as a chin strap - really didn't understand that...

This sitting low nonsense is something I don't understand so I like to picture said yoof (or old lady, but at least they have an excuse even though they should't be on the road), wearing a top hat while driving. Either that or a Marge Simpson hairdo. They don't look half so hard/cool/down wiv da homoboys then.

Do you think monocles will ever come back into fashion?

Used to see this all the time from 'yeah blud' types in Bristol. Really uncomfortable looking.
