I purchased my Mk1 Golf with a personalised plate on the car and am wanting to revert back to its original registration. Can anyone tell me what is involved in the process and whether it should cost me anything? I don't particularly have any interest in retaining the private plate if it costs me less in the long run. Thanks in advance.

I think that you'll have to put the existing plate on retention and the DVLA will then probably give you the original number back.

You may have to pay an £80 fee.

What's wrong with the new number? Could you sell it on?

Not much wrong with it, I would just prefer the car with its original plate. I don't really fancy the hassle of trying to sell it, can't imagine anyone would want it that much anyway as its nothing special.

£80 fee at your local DVLA office, takes about a week, 90% of cases, you'll get the original reg back. What is the personal reg BTW?

As above, you're not guaranteed the original plate will be re-allocated.

Do you know what the original plate was?

I'm guessing from it being a Mk1 Golf that the plate won't be in use anywhere else so you should get it back...but not guaranteed.

Yeah I have evidence of the old plate in the history and a photo of the plate on the car in a magazine.
