I sold a car a couple of months ago via ebay.

It went for £600 via a sale outside of the auction.

I spotted it last night relisted and the seller has told a couple of porky pies. The main one being that the cambelt was done at a certain mileage.

Cambelt jobs on these are pretty expensive and it's an interference engine so will smash valves etc if it snaps.

I told him that it was due when he bought it off me.

I'm in two minds whether to do anything about it or not, am I sticking my nose in when I shouldn't be ?

Perhaps a PH'er would fancy asking him if he has proof of the change and where it was done ? biggrin

Forgot to add the other questions Flinstone !

It needed a new starter motor on it when I sold it to him (i put the new battery on it, unless he changed it again for no reason!)
Radiator was leaking slightly
Handbrake has no reserve travel (works but the lever goes all the way to the top)

That was about it I think.

It had 4 brand new tyres on it as well which he hasn't mentioned and it hasn't been driven anywhere as its not been taxed since he bought it.

Put a top bid of £5k on it then refuse to complete the transaction as the car isn't as described. He can't leave you negative feedback & he will probably lose his eBay fees.

I'm sorry but why bother doing anything?

You sold a cheap car, the buyer is trying to move it on, who cares what his description states, its not your liability any more.

Anything that's not backed up by receipts/invoices must be treated as false, I wouldn't believe anything unless it is documented, not everybody is stupid smile

I'm more curious than anything as the guy seemed very genuine and 'pleasant' when I dealt with him smile

He is advertising it for double what he paid for it as well wink

Is this perhaps the real issue?

Small world, full of shady people...

I just checked the classifieds after spotting this thread, and lo and behold my old car (also sold at auction, in March) is up for sale, with the seller neglecting to mention it was a cat C/D writeoff (although I only discovered this when the auctioneers ran it through their HPI system - I'm inclined to believe they're obliged to tell the buyers, so I assume the seller is aware!)

Received your email Jimmy and the hare is running...

"Hi there

Is the car HPI clear? Accident, theft, insurance claims, that sort of thing? How many of the old MOT's do you have? You mention the service history, is that the service book only or with receipts? Can you tell me where the last few services were done, particularly the cambelt?

Thanks"

Fired it off before I read your comments above so will follow up with something asking about any other defects.

Edit: Why is the italic formatting unreliable here? Sometimes it works, sometimes not...

Not at all, what I sold it for was a realistic value given it's condition and I was more than happy with it. Including tax but ex fuel it cost me about £500 to run it for just under 12 months smile

Lying about the cambelt increases its value significantly in theory.

Well I've had a reply to what I consider to be normal (serious) buyer questions and well, ain't he just a little ray of sunshine? rolleyes

Seller said:
HPI clear - YES
accidents etc... - NO
MOTS's - I have 2
Service History - Book only
Last 2 services were done in Gloucestershire & Southampton.
Cambelt - don't know, the name of the gararge is in the book.

All electrics for car work fine. Please remember this car is 11 years old, so it has the normal wear & tear outside...it's not perfect, but it's a good example. However, it has not got any rust. As I said in my ad...'no time wasters please' if you're not going to bid, do not waste my time emailing me as I will report you to Ebay. If you're interested, then bid - if not then don't.y.
Given that the cambelt is a fairly important item I'd have expected a genuine seller to be prepared to offer the name of the garage.

It doesn't matter what you're buying, Ebay is really frustrating regarding lying sellers. Cars are obviously a bad area as they mean big money compared to other items. I swear the bad seller thing is as bad as ever, even though Ebay crack down on it. I recently had an item that was utterly not as described, got a refund but it's such a hassle you know. It's such a shame because it's a great site, just a few idiots ruining it...

I think you should post a link - then a few more PHers can ask for more information on the cambelt

I'll leave it to the OP to decide, it's his thread after all.

Meantime, methinks he doth protest too much. He's leery already, can't see him answering more questions so perhaps it's time to pretend I looked at the car last time it was for sale and recall it being in need of a cambelt then. Maybe ask him who should report whom to eBay?
