Yes, in 6 months my garage bill was double what I spent buying it.

MTX 75 box. Actualy I needed two, as the fist (second hand) box I bought turned out not to be the correct one. While subframe was out, I asked for a new clutch to be put in.

Engine was a chain driven durotec.

Also in my ownership it needed discs & pads all round and rear springs & shocks.

With hindsight, my worst buy ever.

However, other people rave about the relaibility of mondeos so dont let one bad experience put you off. Just check carefully for smoke and ask if it burns oil. If in doubt walk away.

The gear box failed suddenly and I dont see how you could predict it.

Puma. I'd love a Puma.
By contrast, "Little Miss Duncs" 1.8TDCI Focus has been utterly perfect for the four years she has had it. Not a single complaint about the reliability or running costs of that car, even if I dont really like it for other reasons. Currently for sale as she has fallen in love with something else, but it is far higher than your budget would allow.

Have a 2003 Mondeo 2.0TDCi and a 2002 Focus 1.6 Zetec at home.

The Mondeo has 133k miles but has a problem with intermittent cutting out (glow plug light comes on if you hold your foot down on the throttle and then the engine cuts out).

I've only had the Focus a week but apart from a small amount of rust in the usual spots on the arches and the car being convinced the boot isn't shut it appears to be all good (only 70k miles though)

yeah if you want a reliable diesel, get the tddi, but its a dog of an engine. I've got one in a mk2 mondeo estate (I think its mostly the same), compared to the tdci, its slow, noisy and not as economical - however mines done 180,000 miles on its first clutch, only requirements have been consumables.

How the hell can this be considered acceptable?

Get a puma, Ive done 10k in mine in 3 months.

It's used about 1 litre of oil since giving it a service (2nd service just done) and done 69k miles.

I always get above 38mpg (I have seen 47mpg over 180 miles previously)

AND it's hardly got any rust

Great cars

And yours for £1100 (shameless plug I get bored easy!)

Having owned 90's Fords and seen hundreds more with rotten rear arches I was amazed by how good these were actually. There was a thread on Mercs around here the other day if you want real rot stories!

Whereas I've largely owned VWs / Fiats / Alfas and haven't seen any rust since I had a MkI Golf...

Chap here at work has a 1.8 petrol Focus Zetec which has done 240,000 on the original engine and gearbox, I think all the accessories still work too. Can't recall seeing any rust on it either.

Meh it was bought as a form of transport when they wrote off my MX5. When I'm just after a set of wheels I don't really care what it is but there was a choice of three and that seemed the best of the options.

You couldn't give me a 1.8 TDCi MK1 Focus lump of st. My mates got one, he took the piss out of my E39 saying he would be so much better off because my car does 25mpg and his does 45. Well I have spent £1500 in 3 years keeping mine on the road but I use BMW only parts , he has spent double that easily in the same time excluding consumables not using Ford genuine parts. Funny thing is, he still takes the piss out of my car, but everyone else we know rates mine over his any day. He still thinks his 2002 TDCi Focus is worth £3.5k, when the reality is its worth around £1.5k. It is by far not the only TDCi Focus I know of which has been an utter dog.

yes

I've had 2 as company cars and both suffered clutch/DMF failure, one at 60k, the other at 85k.

Average around 40mpg too.

eek - a 1.6 petrol will return that surely, and you'll pick one up cheaper due to avoiding the diesel tax.
