I think a "trick" is to discard the advisories sheet, so I would advise using that online service that tells you the results of the MOT.
Doesn't the green pass slip still come with a note on the bottom saying "Advisory notice issued" if one has been? Even more suspicious if that notice isn't with the pass sheet.

Years go, my newly purchased (from a Used car dealer in Norbury) car came with 12 months MOT. Amazing given there was no bulb in the Offside brake light laugh

Yes it does and yes it certainly is. Daft really as with the MoT certificate and document number from the vehicle's V5C, you can view it anyway. Only a "trick" for a particularly hard of thinking dealer/trader/private Joe.

I went with someone to buy a car from a trader who promised a years MOT. We bought the car, but it failed that MOT on a few big things. I can't imagine there was a lot of profit left after rectifying it all, but that's the risk with trading cheap stuff I suppose.

A few of the faults I was quite embarrassed not to have noticed.

It's a lot more difficult to get a dodgy MOT these days I suspect, lots of them are fearful that there's a VOSA van up the road ready to nab them from my experience. I've had a few which.. let's say I know the car shouldn't have passed (emissions, decat etc), but did. These days it'd never happen.

I don't doubt there's a lot of cars go through pretty quickly without being properly inspected, but I expect the key stuff is usually looked at.

Could be wrong of course.
You'd be surprised, my car came MOT'd by the dealer with two bald front tyres and two tyres at the rear with different sizes.

Was an expensive mistake that one!
