RE: 799bhp 'Mega McLaren' Due In 2014?
Discussion
Companies build products given their sets of skill and other assets and market opportunities they find. A car like the Tesla Roadster or sedan doesn't really fit McLaren's skill set or would their brand be of value in association with such a product. OTOH, Tesla couldn't build the 12C either. They have produced a car that has quite a few clever ideas/design choices and even though there is no giant leap, it's a solid step forward in the state of the art in places. I don't see any car that's a giant leap either, with the exception of Honda FCX.
McLaren have already built their One-77, they are now trying to build a business that will allow them to profit from their brand, using their engineering skills (even if the teams are separate, the totality of their know-how is right at the state of the art).
BTW if this new car is not significantly different than the 12C as you claim, then it can't be a loss leader.

Why all the fuss? This is an unofficial story from Autocar. Why not wait until McLaren release some real data?
I think you'll find this is deliberately leaked information by them. I may be wrong but companies like this are experts in using the media to raise their profile FOC at strategic times for them by drip feeding information to the right/wrong people in the media.Lambo FirstBlood said:

It will be very interesting (for many, I suspect) to see offical specs on the new Mclaren. I hope it redefines the Uber/Super car sector, just as the F1 did all those years ago.
Visually, who knows? It would be a nice touch to have some F1 style cues in the mix.
Either way, I suspect it will get fingers tapping away furiously, here on PH!
Roll on the new Mega Mac!
Cheers,
C.

To be a success over the competition it must be commercial success, not just faster, bigger or louder. Commercial success is the only measure that can compare vehicles at this level - and we'll never no the answer to that.

I'm bored of this new Mclaren 'road car push' already. They lost me the moment I read 'turbo'. Turbos' are exciting things from the 1980s, useful things in the world of diesel, and eco things in the world of petrol.
Audi R8 V10 Ticks all those boxes Its fantastic
I want n/a, high revs (with dodgy driveability below 5000rpm), and incredible noise. I want a manual fking gearbox and 5mpg. I don't want a fking 5litre turbo engine. A BMW 5 series has one of those.
Great on Mclaren for making great cars, but if they really want to stick around and rule the world they have to make something animal.

I contacted my dealer to talk about this and he was very coy about confirming or denying anything. I have registered my interest to buy and understood I was the second to do so. I can't speak for the other two UK dealers but If there are 500 cars worldwide, I guess that would mean 40-60 cars in the UK so 13-20 for each of the 3 dealers. I remain hopeful!
I tried to push but very little came back. He did say he was surprised at the price tag being cited on the web. He was expecting it to be double what had been mentioned and that the factory would nether confirm nor deny. I must admit, I was too.
He also mentioned that in the same vein of buying an Enzo, customers who would have bought previous Mclaren's would likely get priority in getting this car but he didn't confirm or deny whether the factory had input in to who gets a car (again like the Enzo).
I'd be interested to know anyone else has heard anything else.
