Your favourite "non-TVR" TVR's?
Discussion
Utterly mental topic - granted, but supposing someone handed you £15-25k and said:
"Buy a coupe or convertible. Petrol and insurance aren't a factor, but maintenance is. Loud, fun and fast are the important factors."
Why can't I just buy a TVR?
"Because, dear friend, as much as you adore TVR's you're useless with a spanner and you need driver aids. Unlike many patrons of PH you're a complete wazzock without TCS or ABS"
This in no way relates to the fact that I'm highly tempted to replace the 350Z with a Z4M later this year, wanting a TVR but know myself well enough to wait until I'm a little older. It in no way relates to that.
So, if TVR didn't exist and you wanted to satisfy the above criteria, what would you buy? As always, links to the classifieds are a satisfactory answer.

Top of the budget at 25K, but it'll sound epic.
Or an air-cooled 911 of some sort.

Z3M gives you a much hairier chest than the Z4.
Hairy chest is fine. On fire, upside down in a ditch because it drizzled might not be. So how much of a "hairy" chest is required? My man credentials are already in question given I've ruled out a TVR for requiring spanners and skill.

How about a Monaro or Corvette? Both loud and brash like a Tiv with loads of NA grunt. Think they come with a full complement of driver aids too

Mustang GT with mods
or import a Viper as most in the classifieds are a little bit north of £25k.

Driver training and a mechanics course at your local college?? "Buy a coupe or convertible. Petrol and insurance aren't a factor, but maintenance is. Loud, fun and fast are the important factors."

EDIT: If you rely on driver aids then personally I think you have no place on a public road. And if you must drive buy a 1 litre city hatch and only use it on main well lit roads during quiet periods.
Supra? or are we after some old school N/A V8 style power.
£10k will get you one pushing out stupid figures, coupled with one of those huge jap style exhausts, RWD, and loads of onboard trickery to help you not to plant it in a bush, might be worth a thought?
spend the rest of the money on a japanese car specalist and your set!

Go for the TVR, had a cerbera drove it in all weathers lots of fun. A few scarey moments but compared to the dodge viper i hired for my 40th birthday in the rain, the cerbera was a pussycat"Buy a coupe or convertible. ^^I'm over-egging my ineptitude. I can handle my car fine and I'm alright with a spanner, but undergoing proper maintenance isn't something I have time for, or an interest in.
I work a lot and spend weekends with my girlfriend, so a day spent under the bonnet isn't applicable. Also, no garage at the new house so my tool storage capacity is questionable at best.

MK3.5 MX-5 then?I'm over-egging my ineptitude. I can handle my car fine and I'm alright with a spanner, but undergoing proper maintenance isn't something I have time for, or an interest in.

Refreshing honesty IMO.
Everyone (almost) on every car forum likes to give the air of a Walter Rohrl like driving god who also happens to be able to fix any car issue with a garage so well equipped it makes an F1 team look like a blacksmiths.
If more of us were a little more honest then I think there'd be a lot less conflict.
In fact some here are so up themselves (ahem 300bhp/tonne to name but one...) that's it's hilarious.
Anyway I'd look at a Z4 with 17" wheels (not massive daft ones). Z3M may also be a bit hairy. And more for the satisfaction rather than the smartar5e factor, maybe try a performance driving course too. I was woefully aware of my lack of driving skill after passing my test so did the IAM course pronto so I had some chance of driving my 2nd car (mk2 GTi Golf) without killing myself or others. Didn't turn me into a driving god but it was very interesting and made driving more fun. As did a rozzer driving course soon afterwards.

Haha, excellent. "If you rely on Air Conditioning you should be set on fire for all to see".
I don't need TCS or ABS, I'll get on fine without them. The number of times I've actually *needed* either is countable on one hand, but they're things I want.
My comfort zone when edging in the 300-400bhp territory means I'd rather have them than not. I've had nothing messy in the 350Z which is what, 275bhp? I'm 26 and don't wish my first foray into the higher echelons to be without safety net.
Sorry that my satirical tone has triggered something though...

Has to be either a Z4M or a Corvette really.
Or a Cobra. But there's something about Cobras... speaking personally I couldn't drive one.
Or a Jag XKR (4.2. With handling pack).
I do love the XKR, but only really care for the new shape which is slightly beyond budget in R format. Or a Cobra. But there's something about Cobras... speaking personally I couldn't drive one.

911 is another lustworthy item for me, but the potential bills on the 996 make me feel uneasy. Not a big issue given the miles I do, but I do try to be sensible from time to time.
Have you tried a TVR?
Really, you have to be doing something pretty silly to upset the '90s era (i.e. Chim/Griff/S-Series) cars. On trailing throttle they tend to understeer and with decent tyres the traction is pretty considerable in the dry. Okay, you wouldn't floor it out of a slow corner, but you wouldn't in a mk1 MX5 or a 350Z either. The lack of ABS is less excusable - given you don't choose when you use that - but a risk worth taking.
As for maintenance. Well, you can pay someone else to do it for you (which isn't as pricey as you might fear) or you might be pleasantly surprised how simple they are to work on. A few weeks back I did first ever engine removal outside in a farm yard on a Chimaera 500...
I would say Z3M, but one of those will probably cost about the same as a decent Chimaera or Griffith to run. And the other car that struck me as somewhat TVR-like in its manners you've already got, I gather: the 350Z.
