Whilst admiring the new traffic lights at Countess Services on the A303, the though occurred to me. "Why do roundabouts need traffic lights?" Surely the whole point of a roundabout is that it is a free for all, and providing everybody obeys the rule that traffic from the right has priority, it's self regulating?

How to screw up a roundabout? Install traffic lights, works every time.

It would never work on 4 lane roundabouts, let's get a little realistic here lol.

I don't think 4 lane roundabouts work anyway, nobody ever uses the inside lane. Or they're in the wrong lane and need to change when exiting and blocking.

Depends if the roads crossing are of disparate volumes. If a busy A road crosses a small country lane, the people trying to exit that lane have to wait bloody ages for an opportunity.

I was thinking of starting a similar topic .NB thinking not a strong point

Anyway , i was on a roundabout which has lights on it ,A3 Tolworth ,and some of the lights

were not working ,and no one knew how to cope with it.

Shirley it is now just a roundabout now ?

I had a car almost pull out on me [in a HGV] because her lights were out

Doh ,give way to the right luv

Under those circumstances it should be a light controlled crossroads though, surely?

Slightly OT, but during the course of my travels I've come across so-called 'Magic Roundabouts'. One in Swindon, and to a lesser degree, in Hemel Hempstead. No lights, but confusion nonetheless, especially if the traffics heavy!
