My Dad is looking at chopping in his Merc C class estate as my Mum reckons it hurts her back on long runs and it is too low to get in and out of easily. They both like the ride quality in my Range Rover but I think the running costs will be too much for them.

So, here is the question - can the PH sages suggest something that rides nearly as well as the RR and is also quite tall but is less thirsty/costly to maintain?

Cheers all.

A Range Rover on LPG? Find a good car, and a good independent specialist, and they're no worse on maintenance than most other 4x4's.

Equivalent MPG around 30 based on cost.

+1. Not quite RR, but still a very good ride indeed.

We have two of them; they ride very well and should be much cheaper to keep on the road than a RR for maintenance costs. My dad's manual one averages around 26-28mpg or 31mpg on a long run, the auto gets a bit less.

Also, they have the air suspension which can be lowered and locked to access height for getting in and out of if your mum is worried about the height.

I ran a 2006 Disco 3 for 4 years and can confirm that it,s ride
quality is excellent. Never had a problem with it except for a parking sensor.

Thanks all.
The Disco seems to be a strong contender, I wouldn't have thought of the RX or Murano so will look into those.
CVT on the Murano would put me off...

The CVT in the Murano is amazing.

Test drive one, trust me.

It's what I would buy, but the OP states they have trouble comfortably getting in and out of a Merc C Class. I don't think the Outback would be much higher, so may not cover this.

(My Dad is similar, he needs either a Soft-Roader or a small MPV to be able to get in and out easily, and appreciates the higher driving position offered by both.

Touareg V6 TDi with air option, although pretty good without anyway.

Have a look at Jeeps. They all use unibody construction and originally set new standards in ride and handling.

Still good today, still a proper 4x4 too and cheaper than a LR to run.

Toyota Landcruiser. Very comfy on the M-way and for pootling about. Pretty cheap to run (not incl fuel!) and very reliable.
