Don't rule out the current Freelander - it rides superbly and if it's big enough for your needs will be quite a bit cheaper to run.

Probably not a bad shout actually. IRS/IFS, good chassis and suspension setup too.

Disco 3 is a nice ride.
disco interior is an inferior place to be though eh...

I find the volvo xc90 very car like to drive in terms of handling and feeling of its size..

Defender with a cushion. Oh, and a plug in heater for winter.

Except the turning circle, which is that of a small supertanker....

Ours has heated seats and cushions - almost seems a bit wrong...

Back end is a bit solid over bumps though -it can make a speed hump feel like a stunt car ramp!

Oh and talking of comically large turning circles....

If running costs are an issue, I don't think that a big 4x4 with complex air suspension is really going to be the thing.

4x4's without air suspension tend not to ride as well as ordinary cars since they need stiffer springing if they are to have any sort of off-road capability and yet not bounce all over the road.

So, whilst it may be the practical answer rather than the correct PH one, I think they might need to look at a midi-MPV or, at most, a Honda CRV or Nissan Qashqai.

Previous gen. X5 diesel. All the Rover stuff has the terrible de-tuned engines that BMW let them have after nicking the good bits off the RR!

Bluebarge - good point re air suspension, my impresssion is that you only get that on 4x4s - if there are other options which have it, are tall but are 2wd that would also work. I think they've already tried the CRV but didn't get on with it.

I used to have a Defender, my mum had to use a stepladder to get in it...

And they do a 2wd version now which is meant to be more economical if thirst is a concern
