If a 996 Carrera 2 could reproduce feats of performance like that the rest of the range would be largely redundant.

Anyway I know better than to get into a debate with Porsche fanatics. Aaaam oot!

Whatever you say........

ETA for your edit "rest of the range would be redundant": So the only factor in buying a different 911 is 0-60 alone?

I don't think we have... but the DVLA reckon it has a 3.2 litre engine, so I don't think it belongs here anyway!

What's this, the new shape 911?

With respect, I believe it does..

I'll state my case;

New, it was a £50k VW Beetle (hardly a good car to start with). They then gave it the mother of all bodykits and a lairy interior that couldn't make its mind up between being sumptious and spartan (leather etc but manual window winders!?). Yes, it has a 3.2 V6, but it's hardly rocket power at 210bhp in something as lardy as that. In this day and age that car should have been comfortably over 300bhp to pull off those looks and that price tag.

It is actually pretty brisk, not unlike it's sister car - MKIV R32.

Not that slow, 0-60 in c6.5 seconds, not bad for a Beetle.

which cars in particular?
Initially, cars like the Lotus Esprit and Ferrari 348. By the time it went out of production, in 2005, the Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Gallardo. And to some extent - though it doesn't really have the exotic looks of the NSX and other competitors - the Porsche 911, which went from starting at 250bhp when the NSX was introduced to starting at 325bhp when it went out of production.
Fair point in terms of looks, and other cars having more power for similar looks. But the NSX was £60k at the end of its life - whereas the others (911 excluded), were twice the price.
Quite so - and I suspect that the people who would buy an NSX don't give a toss, just as the people who would buy a 1.6 Elise don't care that it will be out-dragged by some hot hatches. It certainly wouldn't bother me.

The point I was making, really, is that the NSX wasn't a sheep in wolf's clothing when it was launched, and it didn't become one through staying the same while the world moved on. A coelacanth, perhaps, but not a sheep wink

CAn I say the Polo 16v from 1998...

Told of range polo with 100 bhp and it could not even crack 10 seconds 0-60.

Kind of like the boy racer car of its day that just couldnt deliver.

or the punto sporting mk1....

there was something about it with its looks, but it certainly wasnt sporting.
I had one of these about 7 years ago. It had a 16v badge in the grill and alloys over the basic mode but no other 'sporting' pretensions. Was notably quicker than a boggo polo without really looking it.

Didn't they make a MK1 TT with 150bhp and front wheel drive? Can't imagine that being all that quick?
As quick as the 19-, exactly the same engine as the 180 but detuned, a remap will see 210.

Corrado 2.0 8v. Looks the same as a VR6 - only the wheels give away that it isn't. Only packs 115BHP!

On the upside it is quite economical! smile

The GX is missing the huge intake scoop on the bonnet. I think the "man on the street" would notice that.
I dont. Just looks like an Imprezza to me. I didnt even know they did other versions apart from a WRX or whatever. I dont drive them, I have no inclination to ever own one, so an Imprezza is just n Imprezza to me, so yes it fully meets the OP's criteria.

Unfair- they only made about 200 of them (LHD only, too) towards the end of the model's life, and it was largely ignored by the buying public.
