A friend of mine had been absent from ph for some time and upon his return, he was somewhat surprised to see a distinct lack of spelling police in action as it had been quite the thing the last time he had been a regular on ph.
This friend said he was quite heartened to see they were making a slow comeback as it stirred up fond memories of his previous tenure as a member of ph.

My friend wonders whether your friend's user name is a reference to winter sports or whether he is in fact a Portuguese named S. Lopes. This friend said he was quite heartened to see they were making a slow comeback as it stirred up fond memories of his previous tenure as a member of ph.

I don't know why some people above assume that Princess Margaret had no friends, and just sat dining with her security detail. She was a famous party girl, and had the sort of friends who might have got up to some of the stuff that appears on this thread from time to time. The three blokes she was with when I saw her partying were evidently friends/admirers/cronies. The big bloke at the next table got up and left as her group did, and there was another big bloke in the coat lobby (this was The Ivy some time in the 1990s, before it changed to the current layout).
My friend has always wondered if the older generation Royals were ever charged in such establishments, to counter that if my friend owned such an establishment he wouldn’t even let some of the current crop of younger / minor Royals sit down in the first place.I do not recall, but have no reason to suppose that the Ivy did not present a bill to one of the party at the end of the long and hilarious meal. The Ivy being the Ivy, the staff treated her and her group exactly the same as they treated all the other diners that evening. There was no bowing and scraping, no YRH ing, etc. That is one of the reasons why it is such a great place
Margaret gave the impression of being great fun, but also of being rather sour and negative. Because reasons.

My friend went to The Ivy in Harrogate when it first opened , he cannot express his disappointment enough , a very poor relation of the original.Margaret gave the impression of being great fun, but also of being rather sour and negative. Because reasons.
My friend can confirm they did present a bill at the end of the meal , however he’s not even remotely related to royalty .
The one in Covent Garden is dire - it dilutes the brand. The one in the City is great - it is my go to place for business schmooze lunches. I have not been to the one in Kensington because I expect that I would hate the clientele. The original is still great, and the Club upstairs (I am not a member but get invited by friends) is better than the Groucho Club now that the Groucho is a pale shadow of its former self, and less crowded than Soho House.
My friend reminds me that in the 1990s the Groucho was like something out of The Satyricon, as rewritten by Hunter S Thompson. Ah, youth!

My friend would rather drink the water out of the aforementioned trodden in bucket than drink whisky. He thinks it has something to do with the fact his father would be best left alone after the third glass of a weekday evening at home.
My friends experience of royalty is limited to a commemorative mug and tea towel - both of which have behaved impeccably in the loft since 1977 and 1981 respectively.

Mug and tea towel are actually useful, unlike Royals, so three cheers for mug and tea towel! My friends experience of royalty is limited to a commemorative mug and tea towel - both of which have behaved impeccably in the loft since 1977 and 1981 respectively.
Golden business opportunity missed! Come and see the Memorial Mug and Tea towel. Add in some Dead Laydee Di tat, and KACHINNGA.
My friend went to Versailles once. He paid to get in. Nobody lives there, except maybe some people in sheds out the back who polish the mirrors and stuff. The place is a big hit with the tourists, his French friends tell him.
