Golf Gti or 130i
Discussion
I'm looking at getting something newer to replace the FTO and was considering both of these. I know they are both quite different cars but they tick the boxes of being sporty, not having too high insurance group (17 - I'll be parking on street) and aren't too silly to tax. I'll be looking to spend about £8k in about 3 months time which I realise will only get me the lower end of either of these cars.
With the Gti I'd probably want to remap it next year once I've had it for a while. With the 130i I might want to add lsd next year as this should make it a much better hoon mobile.
I'll not be doing any commuting miles as of next month but it does mean the car will be left sitting on the street most of the week.
Any thoughts, opinions or alternatives?

Having driven both (and owned several BMW 3.0 straight six cars), I think I'd rather go down the Golf road. If you are not doing loads of miles, how about a Golf R32? Better sounding engine than the Beamer (IMHO).
Cheers.

In pretty much every respect the gti is a better car than the r32. I still bought the r32 though... Cheers.

Don't forget the OP said it'll be parked on the street for most of the week...Cheers.

...and R32 Golfs are pretty prone to getting nicked.

That + my Glasgow postcode are not good for insurance prices....and R32 Golfs are pretty prone to getting nicked.
If I take commuting off of my policy will it make much of a difference?
I thought the BMW would have been more popular and wasn't expecting the R32 recommendations.

I'm beginning to agree with you. It's not going to be in daily use so I'd rather get more smiles when I do take it out for runs!http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... help - which, not what, car!&mid=87481

If I wasn't going to be parking on the street then I'd go for a proper 2 door sports car and not a hot hatch. Needs must though...

As a car to entertain, it really fits the bill. Its very swift and very very capable of covering ground at pace. The brakes are superb and the engine is a gem - sounds superb when on it, but is hushed when you need it to be. Sure, its still a 1400kgs hatch and no sports car, but its credentials in the sector it occupies are in no doubt.
Perhaps the best accolade I can give the car is that having been used to changing my cars on a regular basis, I am now at a point where unless I am prepared to spend a fair wedge more, there are no other cars I consider as being a step up (im talking in the £9k hot hatch sector with cars post 55plate)

Have a poke around my GTI at the next Blythswood meet.
If it's 130i or R32, I'd go 130i... More power, faster, cheaper to insure, won't get nicked, lots more economical on fuel/tax.
You know more displacement and cylinders trumps a GTI.
I've got a 130i and I don't regret it for a minute. It is an absolutely fantastic car. Unlike many of the other cars I've owned, I've never felt like it needs more power, or could be quicker. The main bugbear is the ride quality, but with some decent non runflat tyres apparently that improves drastically. I'm a little skint at the moment so cannot really justify throwing away four RFT's in exchange for some ride quality.
I do really fancy the Birds auto's dynamics package though. If I had £4k that's where it would go - new suspension and an LSD mmmm!

If you can live with the relative impracticality of the BMW (which I'd guess you can if you're coming from an FTO), I'd buy the 130i.
What's impractical about it? I went and looked at a 130i today and was quite impressed overall. The car has a nice stance to it, the seats are comfy and the driving position is good, there was also decent enough room behind the drivers seat. The only thing I didn't like about it is the tiny rear window. All going well I'll find a nice, lower miles example over the next couple of months.
