I mean milage wise.

Now stone chips scratches etc do people change them at 100k ish or strictly when it's an MOT failure issue?

Wife has two chips picked up recently non MOT issues but it's done 158k miles
My car has a stone chip again not MOT failure.

To me keeping a car in mint condition includes the glazing.

Likewise rear windows and of course some elements fail so do you change it every so often? Or am I going way over the top and only the richest or most pedantic petrolhead would do so.

Never even thought about this, in 25 years of driving I've only ever changed a screen when it had a big enough crack to fail an MOT. I do 25k miles a year in my daily driver and have only just had the screen changed after 4 years due to a large stone dropping off a lorry and cracking it.

AFAIK the screen in my 1997 TVR is the original factory fit one.

ETA There is always a risk that the windscreen monkeys will screw something up (its happened to me twice) so why would you take the chance unless you have to ?

Only if they get cracked. Never replaced one out of choice.

The screen on my MX5 has a fair bit of surface scratching - due to car wash use by the original owner by the look of it. It doesn't bother me to the extent that I'd pay to get it replaced out of my own pocket though.

I own (Mad!!) several classics still with toughened screen and generally original or near original (over 30 years old) screens.

To me they are are similar to the tyres I run.

Only retained if legal, driveable and safe.

But then I am a cheapskate. (retired Accountant Sad etc)

But I still like my cars.

I would replace mine only if they were bucked through. Or if they had that hideous blue/green tint at the top which I absolutely hate.

Never thought about seeing them as a replacable item to be honest, though if I get one of my dream cars next its something I will definately consider now.

Seems kind of sensible really. But I guess like tyres people dont really like paying unless they really need changing! ( me anyway)
I'm sure i heard/read somewhere that glass provides 30% of a cars strength also. For the life of me cant remember when I heard it but i was very young... surely it doesnt make sense though.. im rambling.

The worse car i ever had for windscreens was a 53 plate Clio, I bought it new and within the first year/10000 miles of driving it has several large chips, I had to replace the screen just to sell the car.

Never had to change one in around 30 cars, but would probably only change if it was MOT failure crack or the like. Unless the car was a keeper or restoration project.

A nice new screen can make a big difference on a car.

I wouldn't replace one unless it was unsafe/illegal. What would be the point?
