Please help me decide, £14K to spend..
Discussion
Guys,
I'm after a fun car to drive to work, I have the "advantage" of leaving home at 4:30am and a cross country route so there is fun to be had..:-). There are however a few caveats
I need at least a 2+2, the rear seats can be occasional but I'm part of a family of 3. ( but i do have other cars)
The car will be left at work in a shared car park. it will get dented, my current transport has dents in every panel caused but other people, hence my nominal limit of £14K.
I don't mind if its a bit thirsty i can budget for the fuel, but I'm not so keen unexpected large service costs,( I tend to spend any spare cash on other toys and I have expensive hobbies) hence I fancy something reasonably new and low-ish mileage.
A couple of cars that seem to fit the bill are..
Maxda RX8, Megane R26, or maybe a Renaultsport Clio
Any others i should be considering?
cheers
Martin

A Land Rover 90 with a supercharged V8, autobox, 2" suspension lift, 2" body lift and 35" tyres. You will get to work irrespective of the weather and you will not be receiving any dents in the car park. It will barely depreciate which will more than offset the fuel consumption.
One of my other cars is a 4L jeep Wranger with lift, winch, Mud tyres, and if needed, chains. So I can get to work what ever the weather! :-)
Far as I can see, the RX-8 is pretty disliked because no matter how much you budget for fuel, it will still be worse than you expect, it may comprehensively break itself at short notice despite good maintenence, and you will never ever ever be able to sell it.
A very tidy Monaro VXR, on the other hand.. Or, depending on your preference, a Cerb is also an excellent idea, and probably what I'd do

A late model low mileage Integra Type R DC5 will be under your budget, terrific to drive, peanuts to run, very good residuals, fine for short blasts and motorway runs, fun to drive to its limits on the road
A really good example of a 968 sport will come under your budget, try and find a sport model with a/c, not clubsport which is basically the same car but costs 50% more. Cheap to run buy one thats got a good history, will be worth the same or more when you come to sell.
EVO MR340 should find a nice low mileage 2004/2005 in your budget. Not as expensive to run as you might think as long as you can live with 20 mpg.
Impreza Spec or Type 25 - the ultimate B road machine. you will find low mileage 2003/2004 in budget.
M3 E46 manual, but be prepared for large bills.
Or add a bit to your budget and get a 335 E90 4 door?

Whilst I understand to a point some if the hate towards the RX-8, 14k is putting you firmly into R3 territory
Slightly better fuel economy, factory suspension that is much closer to the PZ set up, a Recaro interior and crucially, a third oil injector, which not only helps to reduce oil consumption, but also gives better apex seal protection
At that budget, I'd be seriously tempted by an R3.
That said, I'd also be seriously tempted by a Monaro
