Ultima???
And I thought the previous GT40 guess was way off!

I have a vaguely rough idea of what it is, but am not too sure, so was hoping one of the beards could confirm my guess or provide an absolute answer with their own knowledge.

Not sure about that one. The two dizzies confuse me, frankly, since it doesn't look like a twin spark layout. It's DOHC, which I believe rules out a GT40. I can't read the script on the cam cover though. The tread pattern on the tyres suggests late '60s, as do the wire wheels.

The red would be Italian colours in the '60s, and it doesn't look like a Ferrari engine to my layman's eyes, plus it's a V8, which I don't think Ferrari raced in that period. I suppose it could possibly be some or other Bizzarrini, though then again I think they might have had American engines, which would rule them out too. That kind of leaves Maserati, but I can't think of any mid engined sports racers that they produced.

Ignoring the colour = Italy guess for a second, is it a Can Am entry, perhaps a McLaren, or something with a Climax engine?

EDIT: Oh wait, it does look like it's got two plugs per cylinder. Something from Alfa Romeo? They had a twin spark V8 around at the time, I believe, in the 33/2 Stradale. That doesn't look at all like a Stradale though.

The only sixties twin cam' V8 I can think of is the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33.

I really must get my 33 project started.

Yeah, the door window frame matches this variation of the 33/2 reasonably well,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHaCS8rYVgw&fea...

but the huge side intakes suggest the presence of side mounted radiators not present in the OP's picture, the clamshell's shutline looks wrong - it looks like it curves to horizontal in the OP pic, the engine matches the 33/2's layout more or less but is different in detail and the cam covers don't resemble any of the cam covers I can find pictures of on Alfa V8s, and the framework visible differs from what I could find - admittedly on a Stradale - in a number of significant details. Plus, all this research reminded me that Alfa racers of this era had magnesium wheels, so that's another reason for me to start doubting it's an Alfa.

It looks like it has some kind of ram-air intake for the brake cooling on the sides, so the car in question must have some vents there.

Could be a replica with either an original engine or twinspark heads on a Ferrari (Lancia 8-32) block.

Not a 250LM, that's got a V12, SOHC I think.

Damn you're good. It is indeed that, I was going to post up the other pic I had which was taken from the front and therefore was a pic of the actual car, but I wanted to see if anyone could have got it from that shot alone.

It was never an Alfa or Fez, so they were none starters. We were a little more confused on the bodywork as it was looking closest to an F3L of anything, but obviously wasnt and the lettering on the engine had us stumped aswell. My best guess at the time was an ATS and from the front shot my partner in crime was thinking Intermeccanica.

Good rare spot anyway, well done, 100ph points to you!

You realise that when you click on the photo, the full-size one is in your photo account, I take it? Or have you added it since?

I have absolutely no idea what that means as I have neither a photo account nor is the pic mine.

Ah, sorry. Click on the pic you posted, it goes to Thumbsnap and under the pic you've posted is a photo of the car so those "guessing" might not be quite so clever?
