Wraps Come Off Mad Unimog Concept
Futuristic concept marks 60 years of the Mercedes 'Mog
That classic do-anything vehicle, the multi-talented Mercedes Unimog, turns 60 this year and this concept, based on the U5000 model, is part of Mercedes’ celebration of the truck’s six decades
It looks to us like a halfway point between car and transformer, but apparently it is actually a case of "Future meets history – the design concept is a further milestone in the Unimog legend" (at least so says Yaris Pursun, Director of Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks).
The concept, which nods at both the possible future of the Unimog and its history (the open-top cab is a deliberate link with the 1951 original) has been created as a joint project between the Mercedes Special Trucks development team, the Daimler commercial vehicle designers in Sindelfingen and a model designing partner.
It was unveiled late last week at the Mercedes plant in Worth. And we want one...
The future: Excessively detailed plastic tat.
Will someone please remind these designers that less is more, and just because the machine tools we have today can achieve a thousand details per square inch it is not necessary nor desirable to actually cram every square inch with a thousand details. A simple, flowing design with a single detail to hold the eye could capture our heart far more deeply.
