Depends, people think I was mad when I used to buy cars from all round the country.. I even went from Bristol to Hull to buy a 1k MX5! Having company fuel card always made that decision easier though.

That said, my weekend time is worth more to me now so I don't really bother much any more. I dont really look past 100 miles nowadays unless it's something very specialist.

Yes, unless it was something really special I generally wouldn't travel more than 60 miles or so. That said, now I've got my S60 long distance travel is a much better prospect than when I had my Mazda. And I wouldn't buy a car from
Bradford unless it was from WRC Sales, who seem to be going through a funny patch now!

Travelled to Cheshire for a Volvo 1800S and am going just south of Birmingham tomorrow for an XJS. smile

I kind of like the travelling, and make a day of it. Probably the only place I wouldn't be interested in going would be South East London/Kent. Having said that, I did buy a Beetle from Peckham, but I'd seen the car before I knew the location. biggrin

I'd say it depends on the car.....if it's rare then you're going to have to travel.
I'm currently looking for a new runabout and as the car I've decided on is limited to about 150 in the UK I'm not expecting one on my doorstep, although the 1st one I looked at was only a few miles away.... driving

Yes, places like Bradford, parts of North London / Hounslow / Croydon, Tower Hamlets and so on I would avoid.

Add Luton to the list.

I spot a pattern emerging here but I cannot work out what it is...

That's the way to do it!

I know many people who'd travelled far and wide for sheds. (The Firemen from Lewisham who flew to Edinburgh to pick up the £75 Carlton I eBayed being a prime example!)

I try to stay as close to home as poss for sheds although I've bought and trailered cars home from Northumberland, Darlington and Leicestershire and bought and drove home a really sheddy Trans Am from Lytham StAnnes once.

No.

Once I get it into my head I want a certain car/bike I'll go anywhere to get it.

Sad but true. I also avoid adverts with certain names in the 'sellers' field. I dont like dealing with rip off artists, conmen and 'del-boy' alikes. And anyone that calls me 'bruv' when I call about an item.

Somepeople are really making a bad reputation for themselves.

More trouble than they're worth.

I tried to find one closer to home but the only ones worth looking at were all a good 2+ hours away. The key thing is to get enough quality info to make the trip worthwhile with a strong likelihood of coming back with the car. If the seller won't send decent pics or is evasive answering questions just move onto the next one. Done this a few times now and never come back empty handed.

When looking for a Polo G40 for my brother several years ago, we checked several, most being wrecks .
The best one, we bought from... Bradford.
Generally, unless its very cheap, or rare, 100miles would be the limit. The actual location within that distance wouldn't bother me.

Yes, definitely but buying from a "nice" area can have pitfalls as well, there are decent motors sold from the ropiest areas but the chances get lower the ropier it gets, would you buy a two year old M3 from a manky estate, basically it doesnt fit the area, a 30 grand car somewhere like that rings alarm bells as generally the seller didnt get it through traditional means, may well be totally above board, but probably not. I suppose not everybody has the means to live in a nice area but still likes cars and may make compromises to own a certain vehicle but that is all part of the game, to ascertain the type of owner, why they have it, why they are selling, it, history etc.

I think there is a certain undercurrent in this thread and nobody wants to say it but I get the same feeling about certain areas, its occupants and the likelyhood of ever buying a car from there.
