Had to leave the house early this morning but discovered that my battery was dead (left the internal light on last night). No probs thinks I, a quick jump start will sort that out. Cars connected and both running so everything looks fine.

What with it being 5am and me being a bit bleary eyed I dispensed the usual disconnect one cable then another procedure and foolishly disconnected both from the donor car first.

The rest, as you probably already know is inevitable, +ive and -ive ends momentarily touch. Car alarm goes crazy and P & J now dead.

Had to leave sharpish to catch a train but not looking forward to getting it sorted. No idea of what damage is - Im more annoyed that there is no-one to blame but myself!

At least you disconnected from the donor car first and not your own! You would be feeling quite a bit more guilty now if you had smoked somebody else' car smile

It's more fun to connect them the wrong way round - +ve to -ve and -ve to +ve. I accidentally did this with some cheap leads. There were flames from both batteries and the insulation on the leads immediately melted leaving two lines of melted plastic on the ground between the two cars, one red and one black.

Also gutted as i will have to call out a mechanic/auto electrician to sort it out. Don't mind payng for expertise but not when it's as a result of my own stupidity!

Start with the basics - the car had a flat battery to start with so can you jump start it again, or even drop in a new battery to replace the one that you've probably fried? Other possible damage would be alternator, but that wouldn't stop the car starting.

Briefly touched? Probably just need another jump start.

Did try to jump start it again but all that happened was the alarm started makign all sorts of strange noises. It has an after market cat 1 clifford system on it. Im thinking that it may have fried something related to that.

Good call with trying a new battery. Worth a go.

Many thanks for the advice so far!

Check the fuses, try a new battery.

Have done this myself, both cars fine but created an impromptu battery powered 2 bar electic fire.

Or there's not enough power to supply the alarm?

Don't panic (yet wink)

You probably need a new battery anyway if the interior light killed it in one night

Can't see how you could damage anything but the jump leads and the battery tbh. Maybe the battery terminal leads also.

The car's electronics should be ok.

I did this once (jump starting cars while drunk is a bad idea BTW) and it knocked out the voltage regulator on the alternator. This manifested itself as the battery charge indicator glowing very brightly after engine start, if you ignore it it'll start blowing things in the car.

When I was young and stupid I did a couple of silly things with jump starting cars.

First place I would look if I was you, is the engine bay fuse box. I accidently got the terminals the wrong way round and popped the 50A ignition circuit fuse. New one of those and it was fine.

Also has the fire coming from the alternator and metled wiring gag. Then tried to take a terminal off the battery and burned the crap out of my finger when the plastic insulation gave way under pressure. I just pushed one car away from the other in the end until it pinged off.

Top tip, if you're a teenager and you've never jump started a car on your own before, ask for help. smile

Cheers for the advice.

Sadly, I am old enough to know better! Jump started many cars in the past just happened to cock this one up!
