Doesn't seem like such a great idea- I mean no one bought the last 'hot' beetle.
Given that one of the selling points of the new beetle is that it comes with a lovely flower in the dashboard I very much doubt any of the owners are remotely interested in going fast or spending money on fuel..
An 'R' model will not temp hot hatch or coupe buyers into a car thats about as cool as James May's hair.

The RSi was built for racing homologation of the Beetle Cup car (VW Cup), this on the other hand just further devalues the VW R brand.
Can't see it selling very well myself...
Now, if they'd used the TT RS V5 lump and 4 wheel drive system on the other hand, they might of had me as a customer.
Sticking to the RSi for now thanks!
Edit to add - the car in the picture is mine!
IMO they really need this to get away from the oh-so-girlie image. There are hot versions of the MINI and 500 but there never was (really) one of the Beetle.
That said, its pretty doomed anyway as they've failed epically by not bothering with an decent interior. MINI and Fiat both realised that they needed a funky and quality interior. VW missed that one last time and have repeated the mistake.

May I ask why? not in an arsey way, just intrigued to know what made you buy it.
Seems a little pointless, VW are now selling the Golf 3dr in its original form, the Scirocco and the new Beetle... and that's before you think about the other offerings in the group.
Feels like this car is very much built for the US market (who don't get the Scirocco). I think in Europe it would be better designed as a smaller car based on the Polo aimed at the MINI and Fiat 500... but I suppose that would get to close in market segment to the Audi A1.

I had a nosey round a few a while back. They've got one in the VW museum in Wolfsburg unsurprisingly and it's actually quite special inside. Carbon fiber door cards, carbon fiber bucket seats and a slight air of mini supercar. I seem to remember the reviews weren't all that complimentary about the handling and it was LHD only, but I can see the appeal.May I ask why? not in an arsey way, just intrigued to know what made you buy it.
They've also held their value reasonably well:

Indeed, there's not many affordable cars that suffer zero depreciation. I could sell it tomorrow for the same amount I paid 5 years ago. They've also held their value reasonably well:

Besides that, it's original, a bit qwerky and goes fairly well. Not to everyone's taste I admit, but it makes me smile every time I tickle the accelerator!
Thats the beetle they should of built the first time round! Should be on a nice chassis the new one and the engines are great so all looking good IMO.
We've got an old shape TDI Beetle thats never ever let us down at all over 65k miles, it doesnt pretend to be anything other than what it is..a town car. For what its worth now we wont part with it. Handy for shopping trips and generally leaving places.
