Can't help thinking that the car would be a whole lot more reliable, and considerably cheaper if they just bought crate LS9s at 630+bhp out of the box.
It might well be a better car, but it probably wouldn't sell.
If using other manufacturers engines is/was good enough for Zonda/Ascari/McLaren and many others, and even Lotus previously, then why not?

It seems to me that the more expensive the car, the more acceptable it is to buy an engine off the shelf. By far the most common argument for the Evora not selling, is that it uses an off-the-shelf engine.

I've heard it will be manufactured by the Moomins, built out of Kryptonite and will run on pure hot air. Which is all Lotus is full of these days. Less sodding talk, more action.

I don't think it would be a resurgence, more a "surgence". Lotus have never really been major players in the road car market; whether they can become one, remains to be seen.
Probably true but the point I was trying to make is that Lotus has just been in stagnation for the last 10 years and relying on constant rehashes. Yes, the Evora was an entirely new model but hasn't exactly taken the world by storm.

Totally fresh ideas from a team with a history of actually getting things to work is either going to make them or break them.

Sounding a bit cynical there? Not your usual optimistic self.

Agreed; and I hope for the former although to be honest, I can't help but expect the latter.

Getting *quite* bored of the Lotus marketing machine now. Its fine when they have a wealth of great products to back it up, but right now they don't. They have a range of mildly disappointing sports cars.

It's a big gamble for Lotus but one I think they had to take on. Allthough Lotus have been making cars which handled brilliantly for years, they have always been lacking in the engine department IMO. Even the new Evora's powerplant was disappointing. If this pays off for them I think it can only make their already pretty good cars even more desirable.

I'm sitting on the fence. If they can pull it off, it'll be brilliance. If they can't, I'll point and laugh. I'll get back to you on that.

It got quietly dropped. I don't think that the reliability was as good as it could have been.

Errrrr, guess you don't know about the new V6 Exige then ?

350bhp, 1000kg and supposedly Bosch told them to GRF because its such a beast that they struggled to make a proper traction control system for it.

620 HP.

Sounds dubious.
458 italia 4.5 l/570 bhp = 126Bhp per litre
lotus 4.8 l/620 bhp = 129Bhp per litre

Pushing it a bit, but its not too far over the top.

Why not if they meet their power and weight targets? That's about the same as the Mclaren and Ferrari claim, isn't it?
Hehe, as in, that is fapping rapid for a road car! biggrin

Some people here really have no life at all. Whatever Lotus is doing these days, they will critices it. I bet, these are the same stupid people, that were complaining, about Lotus, when the did another version of the Elise/Exige, with the same powertrain, or when they announcent first, that they will use Toyota engines.
So get over yourself, and respect at least, that they (Lotus)try it!!!
And if you do some resarch and find out, how is in charge for the new V8 (Wolf Zimmerman, 20 years head of AMG engines), please take a moment to think about your comments!
Bahar hired about 20 top shots from the car industrie, he has the financial background and the knowledge, how to build a brand and bring Lotus back to where they belong.
By the way, Colin Chapman was the same kind of a guy, he wanted to compete against the best and this is what Lotus is planing at the Moment.
Thanks to all of you, how are supporting the new Lotus strategie like I do! .... and no, I do not work for Lotus :-)

Where do they get you people? New supercar from Hethel with a high revving NA v8, more concrete details to whet the appetite and it's all smug sniping on this thread.

What is it? Do you people just hate Lotus or do you feel that being scathing for no apparent reason makes you feel important? What is the basis of this bile "bla bla it wont happen because I say so".

Give a bloody reason, Wolf Zimmerman was AMGs top guy for years, the funding is there and Lotus having been developing engines for third parties for years and years. What reason do you actually have to be so nakedly hostile on every thread?

No, the fact that it hasn't happened yet in a year since reveal is not a valid reason, nobody could have done that. The fact that you might dislike Dany Bahar is not a reason, he is not designing the car, a group of absolutely top spec experts from all over are doing that.

I don't wish to be harsh, but this is a performance motoring forum, if you don't want a new supercar without a turbo, if you don't want a company like Lotus to succeed then why are you on here? On the other hand if you doubt the chances of success for any reason other than you want it to fail or you don't like the personnel then state your reasons and we can all consider them and debate. How helpful and supportive is this statement to an important player in the game we all love?

"Yeah yeah Mclaren will never build their new F1 or 911 competitor because it's all marketing so far and Ron Dennis likes to talk a lot."

Be constructive for gods sake.

People scoffed at audi when they dipped their toe into 911 turbo territory with the r8, but when they delivered a car that acheived excellence in every area people took notice, sales follwoed and the rest is history.

This is a new lotus headed by someone with a track record of delivering and backed by new money. It looks as good as the competition, is 50k cheaper and if it performs on par with the rest well then it's going to sell to anyone in the market for a supercar and half a brain, just like the r8 does.
