Am i the only one wondering who actually is going to want / buy a 4wd road rocket with catastrophic fuel consumption in 2014??
Could it be any further from what the market wants than a confused ex-rally rep trying to hang with the German-buyers, who will turn their noses up at it, and alienating the buyers who put it where it was in terms of actually buying the damn things, because it was cheap and seriously capable? Now it's a bloated, overgrown "sensible" looking saloon, without the quality of BMW or Mercedes, nor the rally cred it used to have, and from what I gather the driving experience is far, far more civilised than older Impreza fans would want anyway.

I'm wondering who is going to want/buy a 4WD under powered box with catastrophic fuel consumption in 2011. Seriously, who buys the slow Imprezas?Mastodon2 said:

Think your missing the point of a modern scooby. It's grown up with the people that watched it through the WRC.Now it's a bloated, overgrown "sensible" looking saloon, without the quality of BMW or Mercedes, nor the rally cred it used to have, and from what I gather the driving experience is far, far more civilised than older Impreza fans would want anyway.
build quality (reliability) well Subaru are currently 7th, BMW 26th and merchant 30th out of 36 manufacturers. If you are on about interior trim and material quality then personally there isn't much in it. bMWs are not what they once were.
The problem with Subaru is not the cars it's the current middle England snobbery is spreading across the country, all to say I have a BMW and to keep up with the jones. But I would much rather have a top spec impreza or legacy than a poverty spec BM or Merc

Sow impreza what are you on, each year the impreza get quicker, the current saloon and hatch are the best handling and quicker around a track! What car for 30k can out perform an impreza and carry 5 people and operate as a family car?? Focus RS and Evo?
At least Subaru are thinking that there buyers want to return back to it's performance heritage. If it's a WRX designed from the ground up to be a focus sports car then so be it. If they go rallying with it then bring it on.
Its funny how many PHers make ignorant claims about Subaru being out of rallying, having given up on it, having no 'rally cred' etc...
The fact is they're still dominating production-based rallying around the world (PWRC, APRC, national championships etc) and personally I don't mind that they chose to stick with that rather than pour money into a series which is getting further and further away from the road cars they're supposedly based on.
Here is a stage from last weekend's APRC/NZRC round, looks like a Subaru rallying to me:

Back on topic, it will be interesting to see how this works out - I hope they don't lose too much practicality in the process.

As has been said, the hatch STI is a very succesful rally car and has now won more international rallies than the previous hawkeye saloon version. It's not in the WRC because Subaru got shafted by the FIA rule changes and then a global recession that forced spending cuts at Subaru. Good to see they are planning a return to the WRC though
And nobody in their right mind buys an STI because of the way it looks, they are all ugly. But they are reliable, easy to improve, very fast (4 secs 0-60 in a 5 seater with a boot with a few decent mods), handle well, are different and are not german...and for the record the current Spec C STI is much quicker round a race track than the 22B, RB5, P1, RB320 etc.etc.
And finally the posts on here about poor fuel consumption make me smile...(turn on Sparta voice) THIS IS PISTONHEADS! (turn off Sparta voice)
