How secure is the location of the car?

I wouldn't leave a car on axle stands, battery disconnected, on a trickle charger somewhere where it could get nicked.
Surely a car with no battery perched on axle stands is HARDER to steal that one which isn't????

A car where it's easy to get underneath......... Not to mention making it easier to nick the wheels.

Fill the engine to the brim with oil. Just remember to drain and refill to the correct level (preferably with fresh oil) before firing it up in a year's time.

I agree with not bothering with the cover too, over the long term if the car is outside in the wind they will cause more damage than they prevent - expect the paintwork to be rubbed through everywhere they touch the car.
Tosh and nonsense. Buy a good quality fitted cover with soft lining and it will be fine. You will only have problems with a cheap non lined cover.

My TVR has lived under its cover for 5 years now, only coming out to be driven for ~4000 miles a year. The cover is fitted - that means elasticated front and back so its a snug fit, then straps underneath to make sure it stays put. As long as it has a soft lining you wont get paint damage.

if you leave it for a year under a cover it will get noticed as not moving, someone will have a look

if you leave it for a year with out a cover it will get noticed as not moving, someone will have a look

can you not put it in secure parking ?
can you get a mate to use it for you ?

if it does have to be parked my advise would be

Do not fill it to the brim with oil
service it properly, all fluids changed
park it on flat
if you can dont leave handbrake on
concider wedging the clutch pedal down, Block of wood and drivers seat
close all vents
keep dry crystals

good wash
good polish including windows, you want all rain, dirt, snow etc to slide off not stick

lock it kiss it and hope

dont forget to SCORN it else you will be in trouble
dont forget to tell insurance that you are going away for 13 month and it wont be touched

HMP Belmarsh is not normaly called Japan, what you been up to ??

Sell it.

And in a year, buy a car that's less dull than a Yaris. wink

I think the OP should sell the car, unless there is some kind of sentimental value attached to it (e.g. he inherited it or similar). It's far too much hassle and cost to leave it idle, particularly given that a car like that will be easily replaceable at a lower price in a year's time.

Another option is to lend it to someone trustworthy who will take care of it and return it when the OP is back from Japan.

Auto trader has seven pages of yaris t sports. It will depreciate so you might as well sell it and buy a new car when you return.

For one reason and another I parked a car up outside and didn't get around to starting or driving it for 8 months. When the time came to start using it again, I charged the battery and set off for the MOT station, scrubbing the rust from the brake discs on the way. It wasn't particularly long journey so the surface corrosion on the discs was flagged on the advisory sheet but there weren't any other issues.

The chances are after a year of no use and being sat around you'll want to give it a bloody good service, clean and probably end up replacing the tyres, discs and pads.

Cars do not like sitting around for extended periods.

Can you not hand the keys to somebody and get them to drive it to the shops once a month or something? It would make the world of difference.

Well if it's tosh and nonsense then I invite you to look at the damage to my Mi16x4 after spending a year under a fitted and lined cover outdoors.

Waste of time, might be fine if it's regularly being removed to use it for 4000 miles a year, but try leaving under there for any length of time after the wind has blown dust and grit under it.

Millions of cars do perfectly well without them and don't get damaged outside* wink

  • The only reason I fitted one was because the brake system was removed leaving a great big hole into the interior through the scuttle and bulkhead btw.
