Very random question. Just wondering if anyone knows how many revs a corsa 1.4 sxi should be doing when driving at 60mph in 5th gear, only asking as mine is sounding like it needs a 6th gear atm! Its doing around 3 and a half to 4k revs. Is this normal? Thanks

Yes, most 5 speeds I have driven (including my Mx5) will sound strained on the motorway or at high speeds, especially at 70 or above.

They use low ratio gearboxes so you can get a pokey car at lower speeds.

Sounds about the same as my old 1.0 Corsa. Bet it rattles about too, right?

Technically correct I think, as it's an abbreviation of "revolutions".

I think he meant the apostrophe.

Same thing with my micra, if accelerating on the motorway/country road, the revvs can get quite high in 5th and I have almost once gone to put it into a non existant 6th gear (or reverse!)

MX5 in 5th @ 70mph is 3,700rpm.

Sounds quite loud, but it revs up to 7,000rpm so only half its limit.

Yeah, I did too! Apostrophes can be used to indicate an abbreviation as well as possession. (Ready to be corrected if I'm wrong though!)

On topic though, my old 205 XS was pretty much redlining in 5th at *ahem* motorway speeds, so I guess 3500/4000rpm in 5th isn't too far off the mark.

Sounds fairly normal for a small sporty small engined car.

Mine in 5th @ 70 is 4,200

Think yourself lucky!

Although a Corsa 1.4 may be noisy on a motorway, there are many cars with 5 gears that are totally relaxed at 70 mph in 5th.

You can still have a wide spread of gear ratios within the gearbox. If you take it to extremes, my friend's Ram Cobra used to do around 2,000 rpm at 70 mph in 5th!

STi Impreza Doogz?

My imported STi is well on boost by 80, but not sure exactly what the revs would be. frown

Not fun for long journeys.

ETA just checked your profile, so i revise my guess to some fast French thing.

When I said most - I mean everything I have driven. smile

I haven't had the luxury of a Ram Cobra!

106 Rallye. My old STI was geared short, but not quite that short
What box are you using?

Holy moly, I thought my 3 MPS had short gearing.

What is the top speed on that then? and at what rpm?
