Hip-hop kingpin Jay-Z has been exalting the German luxury vehicle as far back as 2003, when he casually mentions "Hop that ass out that S-Class/Lay back in that Maybach, roll the best grass".
Pretty soon it was owned by a number of his contemporaries, including his label signing Rick Ross in 2006. The Miami rapper was so taken with the vehicle that he created a tribute song "Maybach Music" in 2008, featuring none other than his boss Jay-Z. It was the latter who gave most fulsome praise in the song for "the partition roof, translucent and humidor".
And Rick Ross didn't stop there; two more sequels to "Maybach Music" have been released, while the rapper has named his entire record label "Maybach Music Group" after the vehicle.
Whether this is a good indication or not of how the vehicle is viewed in the real world, lord only knows
No need to call me a snob...I know it already...but it is usually the case that how desireable I find a car is inversely proportional to how much that car is liked by rappers or football players. So it is good to have my prejudices confirmed as I really don't like the Maybach. Why is it so ugly? Is that supposed to be a USP?Hip-hop kingpin Jay-Z has been exalting the German luxury vehicle as far back as 2003, when he casually mentions "Hop that ass out that S-Class/Lay back in that Maybach, roll the best grass".

On the subject of rap, I could handle it being crass, homophobic, sexist and misogynistic if it wasn't so dull and repetitive (OK, I admit I'm talking about 99% of the stuff I hear on the radio, I accept there could be some good rap out there that I'm not being exposed to).

Ok, so you dislike Bentleys, Rollers, Range Rovers, BMWs, Mercedes, Audi,...?Basically every nice car has been featured in several Hip-hop/rap/... songs or videos. In that aspect, where there can be given some examples of the Maybach in popular culture, 10x more examples can be given for "BMs" or Rolls Royce.
When the Queen visited our town a few years ago, Her Majesty did NOT come in Johnny foreigner!
Her Majesty came in one of these, and I think if it were I, I would spend the extra for this one.

...when inside it looks like an American's living room?I looked at that piccy earlier and thought that it was nice looking, but when you said that about the american living room, i can see it immediately, a couple of layzboys and some too bright 'wood' in front of the tele sipping a drink from the built in fridge.
Yup, trailer park chic!!!

Agreed- really don't know what people see in them- the interior is SO tacky! If I was lucky enough to be chauffeured round I'd choose this: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2890785.htm

Tbh, as always with these cars, the interior is completely own spec. The number of colours and materials available is mind boggling http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2890785.htm

Dislike and desire (i.e. wanting to own something) are not quite the same. There are cars that I do like but would be put off buying because of their perceived image, which in part comes from who buys them (or who is perceived as buying them). Of course, you could with some justification argue that one shouldn't care what other people think...but in the brand and image obsessed society we live in it is difficult (at least I find it difficult). Basically every nice car has been featured in several Hip-hop/rap/... songs or videos. While undoubtedly luxurious inside and probably faster and more technologically capable the Maybach really doesn't have that unmistakable air of "there is royalty here". The rolls does. While it will garner glances dues to it's sheer size it simply doesn't have the air of timeless elegance that something form RR or Bentley have which will still be amazing in a decade while this will look like a deposed dictators car fallen on hard times.

Some interesting stuff about hip-hop and cars

In response to your views on rap, I could say exactly the same thing about rock (especially though-out the 70s and 80s) regarding sexist, misogynistic and crass lyrics and imagery, not to mention every song having noisy electric guitars blaring away with some drums swamped in reverb but I'm more intelligent than that! May I suggest listening to anything by the late Guru (for example) as an example of rap music that's intelligent and thought provoking and although was never really "mainstream" was very popular and well respected...?
