probably means M sport or something.....
yes

When has a ///M car ever been called a Mxxxxx..................
Like I said in the article, it probably won't be a full-house M car, but BMW don't normally specify M Sport in that way. 550d M Sport, yes. M550d? Not seen anything like that since M635CSi...
There was an E34 M540i in Canada in the mid '90s - which was an M5 with the 4 litre V8.

That is just the same as the E28 M535i, if it hasn't got a ///M power lump in it it is not an ///M car.

Are you tired from being out rioting all night or something? What a stupid statement!

BMW can make whatever they like, its their company :-)

A 400bhp, 4 wheel drive diesel 5-series estate sounds like a total hoot to me (if you combine all the rumors from the story together)
]
Heavy 4wd silver or black diesel sounds like a recipe for fun fun fun

Could this tri-turbo diesel fit into a 1 series coupe? Into the engine bay that is, not the back seats or boot. :|

I never said it was, I was saying that BMW had done more than the M635 (and the M535) with an "M" prefix......which was the comment I quoted.

It is like a halfway house between an M Sport and a full on ///M car

This, basically. It makes perfect sense!

Has a tri turbo diesel been done before? What would the long term reliability be like? I.e. would there be spates of DPF and injector problems?
Mercedes rolled a couple of tri-turbos out a few years ago (inc an SLK if I recall correctly) for car hacks to try, but then went very quiet on the project...

Parts bin special/necessary evil.....it's the way of the world and BMW NEED to make these kind of cars, they don't have the economies of scale that Audi have for example.

I reckon it'll be a great car if it is what we think it is.

Agreed - the bds. Who do they think they are giving you more choice when you decide to trade in your Escort.
Yeah, they should make a hideously-styled, front-driver, barely-powered by an asthmatic ancient CVH, for people with little interest in driving who can't afford the fast(er) one!

Have they though, re read the last part of my post.

M535i, M540i not ///M cars, equivalent of M sport models in my book.

M635csi bonafide ///M car, so there has only ever been 1 car named in this manner, and I think that was only for the European market in Japan and US they were called M6.

read the comparison on that link I posted between a 540, a 540 Sport and an M540. The M540 had the floating discs, the CDC, the spherical bearing suspension bushes, steering tune, the LSD rear diff and many other things off the European M5, it was a hell of a lot more than a 540i Sport. I agree it isn't a full on "M" car, but it is not far off in the extra attention to components important to a "driver's car"

here's the link again

http://www.kindel.com/bmw/m540_info.htm

anyway - I don't think the "MSport" designation existed back then, did it??

Yes please..I'll have one.
I don't think I fit the PH profile somehow.. I'm rather elderly too.
I love really good quick cars and am lucky enough to [delivery] drive so many..and whilst I do have favourites, for me, running costs are foremost.. 6ish quid a gallon is simply wicked..! so NOT realistic and as for road-tax on modern 'useful' cars..don't get me started..does THEFT ring any bells.!
So, I run an Alfa 2.4 JTd.. 200 bhp.. [and chipped..just a bit..shhh!] I also do motorcycles and am used to exocet take-off..and that's why I bought the Alfa.. rocket grunt..lovely..! Not that fast but.. it seem that here there are more sheep than people and behind every woollie there's a camera or a plain-clothes cop-car.. and there is no mercy.!!
So, an Alfa..but what I'd really like.. REALLY LIKE..and I've given this a huge amount of thought whilst out and about.. is a sort of S4 Avant DIESEL.. sorry lads.. for all of you who think, like that twerp Clarkson that this is just too far towards the dark side..try a diesel..just try a nice one.. they go like SOAS and.. AND.. 40..50 mpg..how lovely is that. Fast and not POOR.! [At least if we're paying for our own fuel]
That's it then..Audi A4 Avant Quattro with all the toys and flappy paddles and say 300ish/350 bhp. I'll have mine please in an utterly lovely.. GREEN. Nice.
Regards to all
Bill
And please no squabbling over this and..'Diesel'.! Just come into the real world..!!
