Great to hear of an rs being used proplerly, and also thanks for the honest seals info- a touch worse than I'd imagined and worth considering if it's in your dream garage as it is mine.

But I can't agree with:

"our RS has to be one of the most practical cars that you can drive to a circuit, do a track day, and then drive home afterwards"

Reliable fun etc yes but surely you can't get any tools or tyres in so practical no.

Small detail mind, mine would have to be orange too.

I read it as the car is practical for daily use and you can also drive and use on a track.

Vanilla GT3 is the best car I have ever driven on a track and I would love to own a GT3RS once the kids are out of the house smile

How much better is it than a GT3?
About £20,000 better.
It is a genuine question, if you can track a GT3 and you're not going for lap times is it worth the extra?

IMO, if you have a GT3 CS then not really

You have to be committed though if you're going to rack-up the road and track miles in a GT3RS, as Jan explains. "I have to confess that we've bought a stripped-out E36 M3 as a track day toy now, because it was getting seriously expensive to keep taking the Porsche on track." How expensive, you ask? Well, a set of tyres can cost as much as £1400 and a full set of brake pads is £700. Ouch. There have been other issues too...
fking ouch!

Shame that - because that paragraph pretty much says it all. It is nice to see these cars being used as intended, but these owners, perhaps understandably, can't sustain the cost.
To be honest I didn't think those costs were too OTT considering the use on track. Try running any other exotic car on track and those costs will look positively tame in comparison.

I was however more concerned about all the other issues they seemed to have with the car. I thought the GT version of the 911 engine was supposed to be bombproof and not suffer the same failures as the normall 911's? Admittedly they were sorted under warranty but an engine rebuild on a 2 year old car is never a good indication of long term longevity. Not such the second hand bargain that most people seem to think when out of warranty I suspect.

Would they think of getting rid? "Only if we needed the money for something else," Jan replies instantly. "Like a 4.0RS - if they ever drop in value!"

Fully agree, absolutely stonking and as Head of GT Cars, Andreas Preuninger says, this might be the best RS Porsche have ever made lick

£20k extra for 2 secons round the ring i hear, but for me the colour, wing and 2 special letters would make it worth it.

Nice looking car but reading that this car has had 4 seals seems to confirm what many Porsche enthusiasts want to deny. My brother's 997 GT3 has had 2 and the engine split to deal with crankcase leaks. The dealer blamed his problems on not using the car enough. Can't say that applies here.

Is there a 997 GT3 that has not had these problems? I find it astonishing that Porsche have not been able to sort this.

What is your view on depreciation?
There seem to be far more 997.2 RSs for sale, will the rarity/colour of the 997.1 RS protect it from depreciation costs long term.

OR will it just sink due to the iconic status of the 996 RS or to the ***** reviews of the 997.2 RS / 4.0????

RS owners buying a stripped out M3 to track seems very common! I know of several RS owners that have done this. A large percentage of the thrills for a small percentage of the cost!

What's the deal with oil seals on 996/997s. Does anyone know what the root cause of the failure is and why it effects so many cars?

I also imagine the GT3RS will hold its value better than a GT3, over a suitable timeline.

Surely the tyre / break cost is not that different?

That is a lot of engine work in a short time. Imagine buying that second hand !

My 911 sc has fewer leaks then that and is 30 years old.

And that for a Metzger engine that has been around for such a long time.

RMS failures occur but they are not epidemic. Disuse is a big part of it. I have an RS.1 and and RS.2 and they are both driven regularly. So far, no problems. A more scary issue is the tendency for them to dump al their coolant on the track with catastrophic results. We have had a number for those and I am having my RS.2 modified (have to drop engine and do a weld ) to avoid this particular issue. They are sensational fun to drive and I use mine both on road and track.
