fking ouch!
Shame that - because that paragraph pretty much says it all. It is nice to see these cars being used as intended, but these owners, perhaps understandably, can't sustain the cost.
As other replies have said a 997 RS is not as expensive to run as other exotica, especially on track. We could afford if we really wanted to, but we decided the money was better used elsewhere.Shame that - because that paragraph pretty much says it all. Great to hear of an rs being used proplerly, and also thanks for the honest seals info- a touch worse than I'd imagined and worth considering if it's in your dream garage as it is mine.
But I can't agree with:
"our RS has to be one of the most practical cars that you can drive to a circuit, do a track day, and then drive home afterwards"
Reliable fun etc yes but surely you can't get any tools or tyres in so practical no.
Small detail mind, mine would have to be orange too.
Did see a picture of an American GT3 with roofrack to carry spare wheels, and they has somehow managed to fit a towhook that was pulling a trailer, so it can be done! But I can't agree with:

Surely the tyre / break cost is not that different?
Not only are the consumables cheaper, as the M3 gets stripped out and lighter those parts last longer, thereby reducing running costs further. Also the M3 is not so precious (no offence to M3 owners!) so we can run the M3 and not worry. An example being we've done a couple of trackdays at Silverstone this year where it poured down, most cars admitted defeat, we stayed out and played in the M3. Would probably of stayed in the pits if we'd been there in the RS.

That is a lot of engine work in a short time. Imagine buying that second hand !
My 911 sc has fewer leaks then that and is 30 years old.
And that for a Metzger engine that has been around for such a long time.
The RMS just neeeds the gearbox to be dropped to change. None of the leaks were dramatic, engine runs fine stillMy 911 sc has fewer leaks then that and is 30 years old.

RMS failures occur but they are not epidemic. Disuse is a big part of it. I have an RS.1 and and RS.2 and they are both driven regularly. So far, no problems. A more scary issue is the tendency for them to dump al their coolant on the track with catastrophic results. We have had a number for those and I am having my RS.2 modified (have to drop engine and do a weld ) to avoid this particular issue. They are sensational fun to drive and I use mine both on road and track.
What mod are you having done to reduce the risk of this dumping of coolant?kotafey said:
Good read and great car, but I have to say the above is what stands out for me.
Strictly warranty-only motoring.
But the cost of a warranty from Porsche is more than the cost of replacing one RMS a year, so asssuming no other issues you're better off saving the pennies for use if/when needed.Strictly warranty-only motoring.

Its a weld at the oil cooler manful where the hose is a press fit. This is a big issue, but I am not feeling happy tracking something that can fail catastrophically. SIx this year in my direct area. If you want to scare yourself go to http://forums.rennlist.com/ Go down the 97 GT3 section and read the sticky from the admin with dozens of owners reporting this. When it blows it goes without warning and dumps all your coolant. Great for a track with lots of cars behind you who will crash also.RDMcG said:
