So the thoughts I'm taking away from this (and after reading Rennlist) are 'don't follow any GT3s round the track as they will dump oil/coolant unexpectedly and you'll have an off'...
24,000 miles before the first rebuild is a surprise and I'm beginning to think people really do hide the true costs of owning these things.
I also suspect Lotus owners get an unfair time due to their honesty about running costs and are tarred because of it...

I think labelling a GT3 engine as a ticking bomb is very over dramatic. These cars get used very hard, and ok they should be bulletproof but there is evidence of leakage and the odd failure. I know people who have done 30k pure track miles, and not had any issues. I know of a lot which have been overevved too, and people don't like to admit that one My local OPC knocks back about 70% of cars due to rev limit 3 plus being hit.
I've done a lot of track days (not in the GT3) and never seen a GT3 blow a leak. I did see a MErc AMG lose all it's coolant a few weeks back though!
Given the engine costs, I ensured I had a full OPC warranty, and it's big peace of mind. Ok £1200 does cost more than an RMS issue, but that problem can come back, plus it only takes a PCM unit to go pop or a couple of other things and it pays for itself. But the £20k plus engine bill is what swayed me should the unlikely occur. RE the RMS, a lot of people just live with it if it's not severe. Mine was just the odd drip so it wasn't worht touching imo, and it went away after some use.
I do find the RMS issue unacceptbale on a £100k car though, and they should have sorted that by now.
And on the Lotus front, I had an Exige S which cost me zero pence in anything going wrong with it, in 18 months and a lot of track abuse. Not much to go wrong, but the most reliable car i've had.

Buy if you want, but perhaps with eyes open and a decent warranty; either OPC or reputable independant specialist. Trawl the net for more on this.
Warranty for sure... The M3 comes with Michecline Pilot Sport tyres too, and was equally as expensive to sun as a track day car, ehnce i only did a few. Great car though. But a GT£ really does becon, but this as slightly soured my idea of it being a bullet proof car to keep for years...

As other replies have said a 997 RS is not as expensive to run as other exotica, especially on track. I only compare it to costs, admittedly a few years back of my (very enthusiastic recreational and competitive) use of a heavily modified TVR Griffith. Which is not exotica.

For the three years and 21,000miles I've covered in my GT3, it's been perfect engine wise. It has gone through quite alot of front suspension parts though, shock and two pairs of top mounts. Also had an input shaft bearing in the gearbox. 1200/yr for warranty sorts it. No other car at this level can give you that level of performance and peace of mind for 1200/yr and two year servicing. Steel brakes aren't expensive to replace either.
