BMW E46 330 always seems to have a throaty grumble to it that I can recognise.

And the VR6 - be it in Golf or Corrado form. Just so distinctive and I've heard so many that I can recognise them from half a mile away!!

Ford Fiesta with the Endura engine :geek:

The HCS sounds a little different, less rattly if anything.

My mums bull terrier could, as puppy tell the difference between my dads 12v straight six and my 24v straight six, until I confused the poor hound by buying a 32v V8 biggrin

It was done on the previous page, it failed the first time because an ice cream van isn't a car.

You didn't read the title nor the previous pages in the thread.

hehe

Waiting for the "cars you can't tell apart by noise thread". Based on a 5 minute walk:

Octavia (taxi so a PD)
Modern fiat van
Merc c240
Mondeo (standard looking so 2 litre petrol)
Ford c-max

AMG's, the 55k engines and new 63 engines have a very distinctive sound you could recognise from afar

Morris Minor, on overrun.

The Ducati boom is pretty notable as well... not really car based however.

6R4, rare to hear one.

Group B Quattro, again rare to hear.

Original Mini, straight cut transfer gear whine is always a give away.

Anything with a 3.0L Essex.

MGB GT's are distinctive too.

Le mans Corvette and Panoz, mainly from the dB factor!

eta, Stags & 2.5 PI's

Vauxhall 4 cylinder engines although you might get them mixed up with the sound of a small power tool.

I'm sorry! someone was bound to mention police cars at some point in this thread
