On the whole I think it has been a very poorly organised competition. A great idea, but poorly run.

  • It was about 2 weeks between me submitting my original entry and my account getting approved.
  • By the time I was booked in for a test drive, the dealer told me that the deadline for submitting a road test had already past. I submitted one anyway as did loads of others it seems but I have no idea whether it actually was too late or not and whether I actually stood a chance of getting it judged.
  • The dealer that was deemed nearest to me wasn't actually nearest. There was another one that other entrants had been to that would have been a bit more convenient.
  • There was no mention of any deadline dates in the original email I received, or on the website (which still hasn't been updated!)
  • Some people seem to have been notified that they didn't make the top 20, I haven't heard anything. You would think that they would email everyone to let them know the competition was essentially over for them.
  • The star ratings are a joke and just confused things. Nobody knew whether they actually had any significance and as such voted themselves up and everyone else down. It's obvious who is doing it too because suddenly all the good reports disappear and it is the same average ones back at the top. I voted the reports I thought worthy of winning up only to see them disappear again 5 minutes later.
Out of all of those gripes, it's the lack of communication that is the biggest annoyance.

Congrats to those who have made it through. I hope it is a PHer who does win.
Bang on.

So who's through then from here?

Just emeye's brother whoever he is and andyroo?

Anyone else?

I have to say I thought Tony Hetherington would get through, what with his photography skills and being something of a trendy young dude if his website is anything to go by. I'm certain the new lotus management would like someone like that over your usual car nerd so that makes me think Evo have more to do with it at this stage. And as mentioned before they're a right bunch of car nerds.

I must say though Tony I thought you were about 60 based on your posts on here! It's probably all that correct spelling and good use of grammar. Might want to add a few 'z's and drop a few 't's to get down with da kidz in future!

hehe

I agree, lack of information about deadlines was and continues to be very poor.

Well EVO's email is working. Webiste updated:

"We’ve joined forces with Lotus to create arguably the greatest competition we’ve ever offered - the chance to win a Lotus Evora S for a full 12 months. Unfortunately, entry to this competition is now closed as we begin judging all entries."

although below that it still says:

"If you’ve been lucky enough to be selected to get behind the wheel of the Evora, as part of the competition, then there’s still time to submit your road test review. Remember, 20 lucky candidates will be shortlisted to attend the Lotus Champion Event at Hethel, the home of Lotus.

Our winner will be announced in the December edition of evo and begin reporting on their adventures in a special new feature, titled ‘The Lotus Diaries’."

It's been saying that for weeks. It's just referring to the first part of the competition being closed.

yes nothing new there. As The Pits says, that message has been there since the website stopped accepting new registrations, but still leads you to believe that there is a chance of getting your entry in, even though they have obviously chosen their top 20 already.

Haha - well, thanks very much indeed, I guess!

I will start using more Zs and less Ts to better reflect my years thumbup

Was really hoping to at least get into the final 20, but I imagine my review wasn't what they were after (or just simply crap biggrin )

Dear Edward,

We wanted to thank you for taking time to enter our competition to win a Lotus Evora S for a year. However, we’re sorry to inform you that your entry has not made it to the next round.

As you can imagine, with such a fantastic prize at stake we’ve had an overwhelming response to this competition. Our panel of judges have had their work cut out selecting those entrants who best demonstrate their passion for performance cars.

But, no need to feel left out. If you’re a Lotus fan simply visit your Lotus dealer to see their current range of race–inspired road cars and keep informed of Lotus competitions and events in the future. Or, to find out more about the award–winning Lotus Evora, simply visit lotusoffers.co.uk

Thanks

I've had the Dear John e-mail as well.

Comms haven't been their strong-point, but it has been quite an expenditure of effort on Lotus' part, so I hope it works for them.

Re: assessment - not sure they were crystal clear on the criteria to start with, not if it's based on more than just the article you write. If it's based on what they think of you on the day, then Lotus COULD quite easily skew the selection in favour of Lotus fanboys and those who *ooh* just MIGHT be looking to trade up in the near future.

Is there any way we can find out which 20 of those on the website have been selected...be interested to check their current cars and their profile...

Them, and the chap from Lotus who accompanied me on my test-drive. And the people who've put the website together and done the admin - can't see evo doing much more than providing the advertising forum and some of the selection.

Good luck to those who have got through, the review linked above certainly deserved to get some recognition - a good read.

Out of interest how many people who test drove were asked when they were expecting to change their current car? The odds were stacked against me I'm sure when I answered "never!"

Ok, bro is still on holiday, been so busy that I've still not had chance to contact him. I'll try now.

Anyways, here is my late entry that didn't even get through to the first round. frown

As a young lad all it took was a smooth talking Roger Moore, accompanied by a gorgeous Barbara Bach, obliterating evil henchmen while driving an even more gorgeous Lotus Esprit. This electrifying chase, followed by a breath-taking plunge into the sea and inspirational conversion into a fully Q’d up submarine, was more than enough to trigger a love of Lotus that I have yet to completely satisfy.

Lotus cars have crossed my path over the years, from a test drive of a £2000 Eclat that for once my aching heart lost out to my stubborn head, along with track day drives of a VX220 turbo and the Lotus DNA origin Caterham R400. Ownership of a mk1 MX-5 brought me close to that lightweight, precise, confidence inspiring handling and at one feeling that only Lotus can do, but a clone however good is just not going to cut it.

Having owned an eclectic collection of cars, the chance to live and breathe and share a year with a Lotus would give this true car enthusiast a chance to confirm that Nobody Does it Better.

Too cheesy?! I was going to go with I've got bigs tits etc, but I am a man!!! wink

ETA: Maybe mentioning Caterham was not such a great idea...biggrin

Post your bro's up and we'll see if it's any better!

Being cynical it does come across a bit like you're not in a position to buy a brand new Evora S, which may have counted against you. I didn't think your piece was bad at all. I was seven when Roger dunked his Esprit in the drink so it had a profound effect on me too!

There's no question that part of the plan was to get more people test driving Evoras. Lotus, not unreasonably, would appear to think that they'd sell more Evoras if only more people actually tried one. No doubt if enough people with the means to buy one were sent down to the dealers then it should help both the dealers and Lotus to some degree.

Hence the problem. Round 2 was all about test drives. On that basis it makes more sense to send down Mr GTR or Mr 911 than Mr MX5 as your post suggests.

Pure speculation of course but that's my take.

How dare you!!! The mx5 was my third car I'll have you know young man! Granted that was a third car to a company MK1 SEAT Leon Cupra and the ex's Fiesta, but still....

My bro turned up in his 2004 E39 530i Sport, having just downgraded from a Z4 coupe, so not so sure if you're right. The impression I got was that the first people who entered got a test drive. I entered a couple of days before the first round finished.

Then again, admitting along with my entry to my current fleet of a 97 1.8 Alfa 155, 1999 Freelander 1.8, a SORN E34 525i Touring (now scrapped) and the wife's Zafira probably didn't help my case. biggrin

Still, I'm not bitter, I'm not jealous. If my bro does win I could always break his legs and offer to stand in for him! evil

Oh, and just a thought, how many journalists could afford to buy an Evora?
