What sort of performance do you get from these lovely ladies? 3.2 in a heavy car (they hadn't gone aluminium at that point had they?) can't be brilliant.
Sorely tempted, but completely unjustifiable. I have a Jag itch, especially as I hit 40 this year.....
The performance is fine, they actually feel quite urgent on kick down. A 4 litre is better, obviously, but the 3.2 has perfectly adequate performance. They are quite heavy and your are correct, these are not aluminum, but they still have over 200bhp.Sorely tempted, but completely unjustifiable. Confused as to why an x300 could be 'completely unjustifiable' though? These cars are the absolute bargain of the century.
Here's a question, if you wanted to go shed on a limited budget would you go for a 3.2 XJ6 or a 95 BMW 730i (with 5-series wheels...)? I need something with character, and these two are relatively cheap to insure, but I'm scared that it'll blow up on day one. I'd be heartbroken, and more to the point, broke...
I bought a V8 Sport in April last year after wanting one for ages. Since then I have done 20'000 trouble free miles (apart from a failed crank sensor) and can't think of a nicer place to be during my daily 60 mile commute. I paid £2500 for mine though as bought it from a specialist who had fitted new timing chains (with metal tensioners), new wheel bearings, and discs/pads all round to name but a few.
Blue with beige interior was my favoured combo. I bought it with 115'000 miles and it now has 135'000 on it's original Nikasil engine. It's so silent it feels like an electric car and is very responsive and feels all of the 240 bhp it supposed to have. It will do up to 32mpg on a run but that means being careful. Normally I get around 28 average which for me is just amazing considering my Alfa 155 V6 did similar on the same journey.
It certainly hasn't ruined me and I would say go for it if you really want one. Parts are generally cheap and I have serviced it myself since I bought it. I've had Triumph Stags in the past so am usually determined to scratch the itch rather than be put off by horror stories on the net :-) You have to do your research obviously.
Some pics. I know this is not the ideal setting for a Jaguar but it's just my little area where I am not disturbed and can clean my cars in peace. These are old pics and the car now wears 18" BBS Milan (silver) with Eagle F1s all round.

Oh bloody hell, I'm going to have to get one.....It's been nagging me for a while now.
Do it!But (I'm rather bias obviously) I'd go for a late XJ40. The last true Jag before Ford but with Fords influence in terms of reliability and build quality. The XJ40 was a bold design statement, unlike these which are a retro skin on the XJ40 chassis
