So have people simply given up on the OP's original question and is this thread just a place to post pictures of cars now? AdvocatusD said:

It's a Ferrari OK but eclectic? Built in small numbers? Beautiful coachbuilt body Dirty Frank said:

Thats stunning, other than an Aston Martin, what is it?Some interesting suggestions and clearly some contributors who never really read the opening post at all!
I didn't think it would be quite as tricky as it is, but it does appear rather difficult to find a car that hits the criteria I set out for the budget (especially the lower end).
A Ghibli does appear to be the direction to take, but not many examples around.
Anyone think and an Eagle E-Type is achieveable?
What if we went properly retro? 1940s - 1950s?

You are right! It is not a Vantage, I couldn't justify dropping any more into a toy! I have my E55k for speed!
It is one of the first OI series V8's and in spectacular condition. The service file is quite a read. someone has spent a lot of money getting it right, some very scary figures in there!

Triumph Italia?
Gordon-Keeble?
Dailmer SP250 (looks not to all tastes I know)
AC Ace?
Or get some proper man points and go 50s or even pre-war. For that kind of money you have a massive choice.
What kind of driving? Summer use only, or local use? Need to take more than one other and bags? Fancy a B Road blast or an A road swoop? Do you want it to shout money or whisper class?
It's always better to buy a top example of a 'lesser' car, than a cheaper example of a more expensive one. (Sorry to state the obvious here, but I didn't take my own advice ). If you think you can just afford it - you probably can't. Getting a ex-works car or recreation is also an option, for extra texture.
If I had the space to store them, I would get two cars at 15-20 each - leaving a budget for upgrades and work, and stick to ones where you could get the panels and engine parts to keep maintanance down. One small, light and lithe. And one great big cruiser. Plus there will always be one to drive while the other is in the hospital.
Get the car you always wanted when you were young - always good to raise the spirits.
A smart 60s Alfa or Lancia has to be on your short list (GTV, Fulvia etc).
Yes, that Fiat Dino is lovely
Here's some silly suggestions:

Stealth cruiser - Princess R (4 litre Rolls engine, walnut and leather)
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C253530
Stealth speed - Sunbeam Tiger (this one has 400+ hp)

Lovely TR4 - classic and classless, in top cconddition

Intercepter with upgrades
Enough.

Try finding a 2002 Turbo, you will find they are very rare cars. A BMW is hardly going to fit the bill is it?
At the end of the day, depends what floats your boat.
I think a pristine Gordon Keeble fits the bill.

Great engineering, I believe they produced the fastest GT when they came out, and their interiors are just stunning.
