Whereabouts did the Carrera GT fit in porsche's brand strategy?
"We've got this V10 and no race car to put it in. So let's draw a pretty body and fit loud exhausts and flog it. "
Shame they didn't bother with the pretty body part of that suggestion wink

Strange, I think Porsche is doing a serious disservice to the 959 with comment like that, it wasn't a 'mid range supercar' it was the best car they could make at the time. The equivalent today would be something like the Veryon / 918 and even a Veryon isn’t the leap ahead a 959 was over the then current day supercars.

good point, well made.
Porsche are well ahead of where they were back then...
The 959 was not only one of thebest supercars priod but obviously based on the 911 of the time..
Today we have/had the Carrera GT and the 918 not based on the 911...

Yes, what possible form could this machine take? 911 based isn't going to take the fight to a 458, likewise Panamera based isn't going to stack up against the 599 or FF.
A shortened and lightened Panamera platform isn't out of the question. There has already been plenty of talk about a new '928' based on the Panamera platform, something of that nature could end up fairly close in specification to the Ferrari FF, Porsche would just need to cut ~100kg off the weight and add ~100PS and they have something basically equal to the FF on the data sheet. Keeping in mind that the original 959 was a sort of luxury car that was stupidly fast rather than hardcore racer, it wouldn't be completely out the question for Porsche marketing types to consider that to be a 959 replacement, even if most of us would call it a 928 replacement.

Other options from a rummage around the VAG parts bin could include the Gallardo/R8 replacement as a 458 challenger. I don't see that happening as it would likely cannibalise sales from Lamborghini and Audi and probably even high end 911 models. I suppose it could work if Porsche take over from Audi as purveyor of cheaper, germanised Italian supercars then it might work, but I still see it as an unlikely choice.

Perhaps more likely could be a Porsche take on the Aventador platform. I could see that happening in a few years once the Aventador is mid-lifecycle, much like Audi did their own take on the Gallardo in the middle of it's lifecycle. Maybe an Aventador with Porsche family styling and the V8 twin turbo from the Panamera, with a slightly detuned V12 model later on. That seems like a very VAG thing to do.

Perhaps it's not him...?

It's never looked right to me either! Too flat and too wide to be 'pretty' or even pleasingly proportioned (that said, I don't like many of the modern Hypercars - I reckon only the Zonda looks really good).

I thought Porsche competed with Ferrari because they make sport cars that are actually usable and do not need an engine rebuild every 50.000 miles.
The owner of Pelicanparts in the US has a 959. I am sure he is glad he runs a Porsche parts service and has access to the technical know how to keep this thing in prime condition.
But perhaps I am missing the point.
That used to be the case!

which ironically means Ferrari aren't on the same page as Porsche..;)
I'm not going suggest there is a 'best'
We have Porsche who ALWAYS turn out PCOTY winners, performance benchmarks, despite the position of the engine, useable, reliable...but devoid of that rose tinted emotional connection the Italians so carefully create/protect. Their design language whilst considered and mature is a joke...their handling/steering science pretty much beyond reproach...profit uber alles.
Ferrari, once creator of the world's best looking machine's have stuck to their guns and produced zeitgeist cars, that demand your attention but won't age as well....but they have also grabbed F1 tech by the nuts and shoved it in to awesome effect...the downside... a theme park and 12 volumes of 'stuff' with their badge on it...
Porsche don't need to compete IMO.

Too much aero and colling and regs to allow properly 'pretty' Hyper cars

The Macca F1 is closest for me..
Carrera GT comes in next, in the flesh the standard boring Porsche/German curves work SO well...

They should make a entry- level 35,000 EUR Porsche. Would anyone fancy a new 944? I kind of like the idea of four cylinder, four seater FR Porsche, mmm. I think development cost could be little high to develop a completely new design.

Shirley the Audi A4/A5 platform could be used? It's designed to take a quattro system so no reason a rwd setup couldn't work?

Well at the moment in Stuttgart, the rumours are flying at the development of the LamboR8sche.. which apparently has a 911 front end, flanks from the R8 and a Gallardo rear.. :-)

Who knows now that VW own everyone, I am sure that they are looking at the V8/V10 units from the R8/Gallardo to fit somehow into the revamped 4WD 959 chassis... with an uglier than ever flat beetle body..

Who knows... I will be watching this space...

The 911 - new model coming next week.

Destined to become 1 limited edition after another.
Destined to become 1 viral after another.
Destined to become subject of forum banter, just like now.

It'll be sold out for the next couple of years but I predict after that, sales will struggle.

I'm sure VAG would love to drop the 911 and concentrate on the Boxster / Cayman / Panamera.

Flack from the 911 fanboys coming soon....................

That is true. Shorten the wheelbase and front end, make it front mid ship and throw a transmission into the rear axle. Not bad, a new FR Porsche could be awesome. And strictly with four bangers like the old 924/944/968. I think this time would be more suited to that little Porsche compared to the early/mid 90's.
