Whereabouts did the Carrera GT fit in porsche's brand strategy?
"We've got this V10 and no race car to put it in. So let's draw a pretty body and fit loud exhausts and flog it. "The Carrera GT is one of the very few Porsches I actually like. Absolutely stunning looking car.

Strange, I think Porsche is doing a serious disservice to the 959 with comment like that, it wasn't a 'mid range supercar' it was the best car they could make at the time. The equivalent today would be something like the Veryon / 918 and even a Veryon isn’t the leap ahead a 959 was over the then current day supercars.
I agree. It was for a time the fastest production car in the world, timed at 197 mph IIRC. The Ferrari F40 may have had a claimed top speed of 202 mph but this was never verified and when a magazine tried they could only get it to 195mphvrooom said:
Porsche 959 was designed to compete in the group B rally... is porsche doing rally cameback?????
It never raced in Group B, to quote Porsche "The 959 was never seriously considered for a Group B Rally season; the cost of completing a full season far outweighed any technical information that would have been gained"Agoogy said:
Aesthetically, the 918 has ALOT more in tune with the 904.
The Cayman only just 'dips it's hat'
I'm not sure how the Cayman can be put up against it at all really.... does it race?
Porsche claim the Cayman R is its spiritual successor, & the fella pictured (Walter Rohl) seemed to agree, but then he is on the Porsche payroll....The Cayman only just 'dips it's hat'

I think the Boxsters have done that to themselves already.

I think that they refer to the 200k market segment which is currently occupied by the F458 and the McLaren MC12. The 918 Spyder is a niche model and at 600k it is not going to bring any volume.
They'll have the 960 to compete against the MC12 and Italia, http://www.dsf.my/profiles/blogs/porsche-960-to-ch...nickfrog said:

i reckon if they do go ahead with this 'supercar' it will more then likely be just a tuned 911 gt2, i.e ridiculously fast but few other plus points (looks, noise, etc)
to get buyers to move away from ferrari and lamborghini i think they would be better off using an N/A engine similar to the carrera gt and coming up with a new unique design...

My dad had a 959. He sold it after a year. Found it "boring". It was fast ( but he had other fast cars ) but didn't really light any fires when taking it for a drive.
On a seperate point, many have remarked that Porshe used to compete head on with Ferrari ( 911 Turbo vs Testarosa ) back in the 80's, while now even a 458 ( with a few options ) is a nearly twice the price of a 911 Turbo. This is fair enough, as the firms have adopted different strategies. Ferrari have limited supply to enable them to drive up the price of their products, Porsche have gone for volume at the other end of the market ( Boxtster et al ) to get economies of scale.
Strangely enough, both strategies have succeeded ! Porsche was ( and may still be ) the single most profitable car company in the world, while Ferrari have gone from being a basket case ( financially ) into one of the most valuable automobile manufacturers in the world.

Most cars with that kind of mileage will have their values slashed.http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3164213.htm
